What would you tell a brand new quilter to focus on first?

Holice 09-03-2010 07:11 AM

accurate measuring
accurate cutting
accurate piecing

straight cuts, accurate scant 1/4" seam, squared up blocks (at least that's where I needed help in the beginning).

Relax. Enjoy the process.

Take your time. Measure twice or three times, cut once. Press, not iron your fabric. Make friends with your seam ripper. Ask questions, be excited about what you are working on and most of all....HAVE FUN!

Start with something no larger than approx 45 x 60 inches.

Start with something with five or less fabrics.

So in case this is something the person decides was NOT one of his/her best ideas, the cash outlay is not overwhelming.

Pretty much follow the KISS approach -

Keep It Simple, Sweetie.

The prep work may seem tedious but it is sooooo important. If you take shortcuts you WILL pay later, so you may as well do it right when you start. By prep work I mean measuring, cutting, pressing, accurate seam allowance.....

Also: Don't stress, have fun, and sign up on the QB.

All of this is good advice, but I particularly agree with Bear. Start with a project simple enough that you can finish it without becoming frustrated.

As soon as you know you will continue quilting, get the best equipment you can afford.

Your first quilt will technically be both the best quilt you have ever made and the worst. Yeah, I know it's a trick of language, but it helps us to remember that it is learning and growing as a quilter that keeps things interesting.

Your second quilt will again be your best ever. Beginning quilters have the joy of improving in big leaps, enjoy it.

don't stress the small stuff.
just like if a recipe calls for idaho potatoes, it's going to be just fine if you use Michigan potatoes...
don't worry about doing everything just like everyone else, let your own ideas shine through and enjoy the process without sweating the inconsequential.
