Here is some of my last scrap charity quilts. Very easy.
|
Thanks for all the great ideas. So many pretty quilts!
|
I will vote for Disappearing Nine Patch as well. I have also seen interesting ways of mixing D9P up by slicing the patches in different ways than the standard.
Wonky log cabins work as do absolutely wonky blocks. I did a tute on wonky coasters, just using them as little design exercises: http://greenwich-8.blogspot.ca/2012/...r-studies.html Made a little larger, these little wonky blocks would work well in a charity quilt...you could put a motif at the centre as well ie. different puppies, flowers, or birds from various fabrics etc. Anyone got any inventive quilting approaches to the standard disappearing 9 patch layout?? Regards, Janet |
PokerDiva - I love both of your quilts, but are there instructions for the top one and/or the blocks that are not scrappy on the bottom? I think these are great and I have SO many 2 and 2.5 inch strips to use up.
|
I have more cut out for more quilts for the top two but I can't for the life of me find them. I just did those too. I am losing it. I will keep checking for you. The second one is Sunny Lanes from the Quilters casche. If you don't know where that is I can get you the link to that also.

IAmCatOwned. It was right in front of me. It came from American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine Feb 2011. The pattern is for a 66 1/2" square quilt but it is very easy to adjust sizes. If you do not have that magazine, pm me.

I'm with Plumtree-yellowbrick road or rail fence
|
I am making a tube quilt with 2 1/2" strips. I got the pattern off the internet, just put in tube quilt & it will come up.It isn't hard at all. Good luck rowena101

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t184347.html these two quilts I made from scraps. one is just triangles made into pinwheels that interlock. the other is just strips.squares, rectangles and hst's sewn into blocks in same order, when blocks are then sewn into rows, they are rotated one quarter each time. Hope they give you some ideas.

I can't stop making the Potato Chip Quilt using my homemade jelly roll fabrics framing a square in the center. I like an 8 1/2" square framed by a 2 1/2" strip giving a 10" finished square. Goes fast an is so addictive. I am currently looking for examples of a version where you whack the 10" (or whatever size you make) into equal fourths and reassemble with interesting results. I posted about that a couple of days ago.
I went through my stash and purged this January using up anything that was cut into, too small to show up in my stash stacking, leftover from garment construction, or just not to my taste anymore. Then I set about chopping the purged stuff up into strips of various sizes a la Bonnie Hunter. I have thus far put together 63 tops for Project Linus and have still got a ways to go to use up what I chopped up. The tops went together fast because I had a "leaders and enders" Bonnie Hunter thing going with some of these fabrics as well. I have little piles everywhere even though much has been used up. I have never had so much fun piecing tops or been so productive with stuff I was trying to move out. I can't wait to get through this and start on the stuff I Like! LOL! |
Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful suggestions.
Boring 8" blocks, farewell! I'm gonna break out of the mold. I'm "going rogue", as Lori put it! :-) |
I let the fabric tell me.
|
I also use charity quilts as a chance to experiment or try out a quilt in a magazine that I like.

Those are very pretty! I've always thought of 9-patches in that setting as an Irish chain. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. Anyway...
The Florentine Fantasy is a free download and can be found here: http://www.robertkaufman.com/quiltin...ntine_fantasy/ just click "download more info" at the right for the pattern. The quilt they picture is made from rather busy fabrics, but I will post pics of the ones I've made soon (hopefully). Sylvia's Windows seems to be harder to locate. It was a pattern published in a magazine a year or two ago, I think it may have been McCall's, I'm not sure. Let me work on finding that pattern.... |

Always including 3 solid blacks scattered amongst the others I sash with black or navy, using a 2 /12" cornerstone of a scrap. Have also made the same quilt with 3 1/2" (cut) squares Many years ago when I went regularly to Quilting by the Lake in Cazenovia, NY quilters threw away large scrap pieces. After the classes were over I collected large scraps from wastebaskets, enough to make a double Ocean Waves, which I've called The QBL Wastebasket Quilt |

Do you mean to make your cut squares like Patchwork Posy (or whatever that pattern is called?). That would be super, super cute! |
I like friendship star, pinwheels, rail fence (using lights, mediums, and dark scraps), there are lots of variations on the 9 patch, wrapped candy, cracker. I get a lot of ideas from 5500 Quilt Blocks by Maggie Malone.

Prisons, everybody things of making quilts for cute little babies, elderly people, but the forgotten are those in prison. They are people to and nobody is giving them any love at all.
|
MadQuilter - I can't look at a block & tell how it went together. So forgive me for being obtuse as Barny would say. Please list the steps it took to make those beautiful blocks. What size are they?
|
I do puzzle pattern. Great way to use up odd pieces of fab. I do snowball quilts too and use the corner from the squares to put in the border. If I find a new block I'm not sure I want to do a big quilt, I'll do a charity quilt. I sew for Quilts for Kids so I know if it's doesn't fit my taste, one of their kiddos will love it.

Great quilts and great thread. Thanks!
|
misseva, thanks for asking that question. I need to know too.
|
All of these quilts and ideas are wonderful. Thanks to all for sharing. I have found many good patterns for charity quilts.

I used strips of darks and lights - alternating. You sew them together on a 45 degree angle.

If you've got scraps that are strips, make some rail fences. They are so quick and each one can be different by the placement of color or number of rails in the block. The stair step effect, the diagonal across the quilt, is also so eye appealing.

Where did you find the pattern fore Potato Chip quilts? I've looked for it & can't seem to locate it anywhere. Is it called something else?
This is what I consider the Potato Chip Quilt. HOWEVER, there are other versions so the name is applied to more than one pattern. I find these really relaxing to make and they go quickly. Another QB member calls this pattern the Rainy Day quilt. |

Love your quilt! :0)

Seems all my fave quick scrappy quilt designs have been mentioned. Love the Crayon one, it looks like a crumb block with done with larger crumbs. May in Jersey

I made 10 quilts for David s house out of this missouri quilt double slice layer cake, I made my own 10" squares. Will be making one dozen for next year out of 12" squares - easy, fun, and ends up being different, even with the same fabrics.

Sometimes I just start piecing - maybe some kiddie prints squares with solids. Other times I do rail fence, sometimes a basic bargello like Eleanor Burns does, just anything to keep from getting bored! Look at the Project Linus web site www.projectlinus.org They have some cute ones. Sometimes I find an easy pattern in fabric catalogs too.

I love to do chinese coins, d9p and crazy quilts. Anything to use up scraps....my scraps mulitply...the more I use for charity quilts the more I have...just like the women in the Bible with her jug not going empty. Yesterday a co worker's wife sent me a white garbage bag full of cotton scraps and yardage....what a wonderful surprise. It's all washed, pressed and I've brought it to work to start cutting up....I love fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those looking for instructions for Madquilter's quilt, instructions are in post 11 in this thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...t267129-2.html

Previously, I made quilts for teenagers in hospital (age 14-19) and for mentally challenged adults. My favorite pattern is log cabin, but I also do I Spy hexagons (using teenager subjects) and 4 patch. Otherwise, it's just a quilt that I wanted to challenge myself to make, but just don't have the room to keep. I usually make them a lounge size, but occasionally, I make them longer since boys are tall.
