When do you move fabric from stash to scrap bin
How small a piece of fabric do you keep in your stash before moving it to the scrap bin? I spend over a week working on my stash bin cutting it into squares to cut down on the amount of scraps. I got about half of it done. Some of the squares were only about 1 1/2". Some bigger but I have some pieces in my stash that are 1/4 yds that have had some used out up out of it. Just wondered how big a piece you put in your scraps.
Anything smaller than 1/4 yard (fat or long) I move to scraps.
I am glad you ask this question...I have often wondered this myself.
I struggle with this all the time. Then last week heard a new term "chunks". This is fabric that you use for make new fabric sort of like a crazy quilt. Just sew the piece on to the next one. So do I start another box for these?
For me if it is less the 1/8 yard or half a FQ then I cut into pieces, i.e. Bonnie Hunters methodology. Unfortunately I need to do more of that. |
For me, scrap is what goes in the wastebasket or the recycle bag (to take to a shredder).
Otherwise, it's "various sizes of small pieces" or "remnants" - depending on whether I started out with small pieces or it's a leftovers from a project. I put smallish pieces (probably equivalent of 1/8 yard and smaller) of the "same" color into plastic totes. |
Usually smaller than a half of a half of a fat eight goes into the scrap box.
I have 1 yard and more on mini bolts. I have an under 1 yard bin and a drawer of fat quarters. Everything smaller than 1/4 goes into my scrap bin.
I usually scrap anything 1/4 a yard and smaller. But I am very bad about sticking anything left over from cutting out a quilt into a bag and forgetting about it until I find it stuck away somewhere.
I join the group that puts "less than 1/4 yard" pieces in the scrap bin. Anything larger I fold on comic boards.

I don't have "scraps." My fabric is all sorted by color, so the small pieces go back with their fabric color cousins.

I do flower applique, so I have several trays of fabric scraps sorted by color. The fabrics are spread out on the trays so that I can see what I have and the trays just sit inside double dresser drawers in my sewing room.
Trying to keep up with scraps....especially now I have discovered hexagons of the half inch variety!
If anything gets between 3/4- 1/2 yrd size I move it to my fat quarter bin. I can get two FQs and a piece for the scrap bin. Anything smaller than a yard is to small for the min stash and will get lost if I don't re locate it to the small bins.

When I'm cutting fabric, I see what is left by laying it across the cutting board. Or if I'm using my June Tailor Shape cut I can see how much fabric is left and go from there. I only put yardage on my comic boards unless I have alike pieces of more than a yard and mark it.
Used to keep scraps until there was I had no more room. Now I give all my scraps to a couple of ladies I quilt with every week. They love them, sort them by color, size and goodness knows what else. It keeps them happy and I'm happy cuz I don't have to deal with sorting and storing anymore.

Whatever I don't feel like folding.
I put leftovers from other quilts in scrap containers and then use them for scrappy quilts. I toss anything smaller than 1". I have so many large yardage pieces that I should not worry about using up scraps but, I do.
I cut fabrics for a quilt, saving all remaining fabrics until the quilt top is finished and the binding cut. Then I take any pieces of 1/4 yard or less and cut them into 10" squares, 5" squares, 4" squares and strips of various sizes. Then they are ready for a scrap quilt and i don't have lots of oddball pieces laying around that I don't know what to do with.
I cut my fabric as it comes in into strips - 1 1/2", 2". & 2 1/2" strips, save the rest, when I use most of that it goes into the bits and pieces and string box. I've been sewing smaller pieces together to make many colored strings - I love this look in my string blocks.
I am contemplating putting small scraps into gallon size baggies and adding them to my Goodwill things to go. They can throw them away if they don't want them, or maybe someone would like to have them for various reasons. There is just something in my brain that won't let me throw them away.

It has to be really small. then it goes in the trash!
I cut up anything less than an 1/8 yard into 6", 3 ", and 2 " inch squares, 3.5 inch tumblers, and 2 inch strips...starting with the largest sizes first. Fat quarters with "chunks" missing still go in the stash as I do a lot of block swaps, etc. where only a couple blocks are needed. It's amazing how many things I've made from the precuts!
2.5" squares for 1" hexies and postage stamp quilt in the future!
I move it to the scrap bag when it's much smaller than a fat quarter (maybe a fat eighth).
I usually put anything less than 5" into the scrap bin. I figure that if I need a piece of material for a craft thing other than quilting, like for applique pieces or pot holders or something, then I haven't cut everything into scraps and wouldn't have to pull something from larger yardage.
I've been cutting 2 1/2" squares out of my scrap bin. There are some pieces in there too small to cut that size. I think I'm going to have to donate those for stuffing to someone who makes doggy beds. I'm collecting 2 1/2" squares for another scrappy quilt. Some I cut, some I buy, and some are given to me. Need 864 of them. :-)

Anything that is within FQ-size goes in my stash.
Anything that is still foldable but smaller than a FQ - like broad strips and rectangles, go in the scrap bin sorted by colors. Anything that is an off-cut or leftover bits from projects - like HSTs, skinny strips, go in gallon plastic bags sorted by color. I use the scraps for crumb blocks and applique pieces. The larger pieces work well in strip quilts. |
my scraps have been out of control, so I recently sat for 1 day going thru all of the pieces I considered scarp and cut (with an accuquilt) 3" tumblers, 6" tumblers, 5" squares and 3" hexagons. these will be used to make scrappy quilts, any small pieces left over went into the trash. hopefully I can keep the scraps under control by doing this.
All of the above PLus if i've used it in several quilts and am ttired of looking at it ......it goes in the scrap bag!

When I read how organized some of you are I feel so lazy! I tried last winter to cut and organize scraps---decided that wasn't me! So now I have different plastic drawers for each color family and put most sizes in there--2 exceptions--all strips go into a strip bag for string quilts and smaller scraps get tossed into a bag by the machine to sew 2 together while using as leader/ender. I then toss it into another bag--a friend made an awesome quilt with her leaders/enders and neutral--that's my goal!
How about using the scraps in a gallon bag as stuffing for a throw pillow? I use my littlest scraps as doll pillow stuffing.

I have seen gallon sized bags of scraps at the Restore store but I thought $5 was a lot for what was in it. I guess I am cheap. LOL I am quite proud of myself for keeping at it last week as I cut, cut and cut some more on my scraps. Still have quite a bit more to do but at least I have made a start. I want to do the Grand Illusion quilt with Bonnie Hunter and wanted some fabric organized before I start on that.

I have one of those cubbys for shoes...I took it over for scraps...if it's not big enough to fold into a piece but bigger than the pieces that go into my scrap bins then I fold it and put it in these small cubbies..comes in handy when I am doing appliqué and need small pieces..

My scraps are usually between 6" and 12" squarish. I went through recently and cut them all into 2.5" squares and am now using them for scrappies and paper piecing. Must admit that I would love to swap them out for fresh scraps. I have seen too many of these too often.
i did go through my stash and gave the furnishing weight fabric to a charity shop and I know it is too heavy for me to work with now! |
