I always try to make a tester block... & this doesn't pertain to quilting but i noticed you live in the same city as my dd....what school is that in your avatar?
|
They all seem to be new patterns to me. I do all the tutorials, do them in a hurry so they aren't perfect, should slow down on that because I always end up making them into a doll quick, wall hanging or something. So I guess technically I actually do.

Yes for hubby.
No for me. |
No, test block here! Just start sewing and after I have a block done I place it on my design wall.
|
I never make a test block. If I dont like the way one turns out...it goes on the back of the quilt

I most cerianly do! Pratice pieces help me find any problems I would have with a block, or design. In the end I make a lot less mistakes, and cut way down on the dreaded relationship I have with the seam rippers.

That's a good idea to use in the future.

I know I should but I don't. I go for it.

Hi. There are several things a beginner can do to "see" what you will get. Cut out and piece one block. Get 2 mirrors and hold at meeting corners at the outside edge of your block. This is very good to let you know what it would look like without sashin and a full effect of setting just block to block. Another tip is only cut one block then sew it together to see if its the size you want. my lessons were learned the hard way. lol

I try to do a test block, especially if the quilt is a little complicated, but not a complete mock up, thats too much work
|
I do a sample block. I want to make sure I can make it and that I like it once it is actually made before I cut up all my fabric.
|
Sometimes I do make a test block especially if I'm not sure the pattern is correct.
|
I usually don't. If I don't like it when done, I can give it to someone~
|
Only if it's a technique that I don't do too often (paper piecing) or if it's just something that I'm dreaming up and I want to see how the colors work. Even if it's just scraps and not the actual fabric I'll be using just to see if I like the layout.
