When piecing do you put together one block at a time from beginning to end or do you complete step 1 for all of the same blocks and then move to step two and so on.
I like the answers I am getting about peoples styles.. It is helping me form mine or at least see if there is a better way for me. So far I am pretty much in the chain state of mine. Unless it is a block I have not made then I make the first one from start to finish, to make sure I get it and then the rest of the blocks are completed in chains… I do the same for cutting. So what are your piecing and cutting styles? |
Sometimes I will start by making one block to see how it goes together and if I like the fabric combination or how well the pattern is written. Most of the time I will make all the same blocks together and just chain feed through my sewing machine and complete all of each step.

Hi there,
When I made this quilt, shown in my avatar, I cut out & made all of the Iris blocks first. Then I made the other blocks & put it together. On another quilt, that had rows of identical blocks, I cut out & sewed all of the blocks in that row. So, it just depends on what you are working on. I do like the assembly line way. Now, I am doing a BOM & all of the blocks are differnt!! :D I am hoping this turns out!! Quilt I made for our son & dil. |

If possible, I like to do the "assembly line" thing. Seems like it goes faster that way. However, I will make a "sample" block just to make sure I like it before I cut the rest of the quilt out.

I make one block at a time. If the block is not accurate in size then I correct it before going to the next block.

Quilting G--From Don-isewman1.. I'm going to say, everyone has there own technique.. As for me, I'm a pinner from the start of a block, to sewing each block together, and then each row together.. At least I will have and ideal if the block's will go together, and the row's together, it will be somewhat squared. But sometimes, I'm a little longer on one side, but not very often.. Hope this help's.. Don-isewman1

If it's something new, I definitely try the block first. Then it's chain stitching all the way. I hate cutting, so I might only cut a chunk at a time and then piece. Chain piecing saves time, thread, and my sanity. My attention span is too small to labor on one huge task.

I make one "sample " block first. Then I do step one of all the blocks and move on to step 2. If it seems too daunting, sometimes I'll break it down into sections and do all of step 1 for 10 blocks and on to step 2, etc till finished. Then I'll do another 10

If I am making a quilt that is the same block over and over again, I will chain piece and then put it all together at once. I cannot stand to make the same block over and over and over and over again, so the chain piecing helps it not feel so redundant. I guess I am a little ADD!!
|
I do make up one block to see if it works, size wise and color etc. Then I go for production with chain piecing! Even when paper piecing!
|
I usually chain mine, usually cut all at one time, etc.
|
I cut and then make one block at a time. I don't like assembly line sewing or feeling like I am in a race. Just prefer the variety of the different tasks as I sew. We're all different I see, and that's a good thing :)

It depends on what pattern I am making. I don't like to cut..so I usually cut like one block type at a time. Also I change my mind...a LOT..so I don't like to pre cut too much at one time. Then I will definetly make up 1 entire block to make sure I like it and all my fabric choices, then I'll chain piece.
P/P- I make a block at a time. |
Like you if it is a new block I put one together so I can see if there are any problems. If not, I do it as a chain.

Gail, keep on asking questions, bc they are good ones. learning a lot.
sulabug, love your stuff! Don,...adorable baby in your av!... you wrote: ...As for me, I'm a pinner from the start of a block, to sewing each block together, and then each row together.. At least I will have and ideal if the block's will go together, and the row's together, it will be somewhat squared.... so far, this is what i do, I guess bc I am learning to quilt in sections. anyone with arthur's or fibro. could benefit from this method. I am sure there are some projects I will probably do some chain piecing, but I have to label everything, to get my head back to where I was, when I get back from "life". everything outside, 'my cave', is life, everything inside cave is, 'heaven'! nothing but fun in cave! (hubby named it and i claim it!) |
I cut mine out and then do as much chain stitching as I can. (saves on thread.)
|
i do what a lot of others here do. i put each block together. if there's a problem, i want to know about it NOW! while corrections can still be made. i get sick of unsewing.

It depends on the block. If it's something easy like a log-cabin block, I usually chain stitch pieces 1&2 together for all the blocks, then press. The I chain stick #3 on...etc. But if it's something I have never done before or looks a little trick, I will make a practice block and then decide where to go from there. I made a bunch of "Daisiez" blocks and made each one individually. I changed the way I cut them for each block so they would each look a little different.
|
I do chain piecing as much as possible. However, I usally make one block up totally because I always get antsy to see what the block will look like.

I usually do one block at a time. I gives me a full pattern to follow because sometimes I get the triangles mixed up.
