When I pin pieces together I always pin toward the edge of fabric that I'm going to sew. It may be awhile by the time I get around to sewing so this makes it easy for me to remember which edge I'm going to sew.

I pin at right-angles to the fabric with the head of the pin on the right (so I can whip the pin out just before the needle reaches it). For matching seams I usually pin at an angle so that the pin catches both sides of the seam - particularly those bulkier seams - probably about 45 degrees or so.

In addition to the regular pinning - both sices of the seams, I also sometime put a long pin at the seam to keep the under seam going in the same direction as the feed dogs sometime twist it. The idea is to pin up/down; back/forth, sideways, or whatever to keep the seams matching.

I pin matching seams perpendicular to the edge of the block and the spaces in between with parallel pins but far enough to the inside that they do not feed under the presser foot.

I pin "up and down" because it doesn't distort the seam.

Whenever possible I stick the pins in well off to the side somewhere so that the seam is lined up but the pins are not in the path of the needle. Much easier on my nerves! This wouldn't work on a curve, of course. If I'm sewing some non-quilt thing, such as setting in a zipper, I would usually pin along the stitch line and pointing toward the needle so that I can pull them out gradually as the needle gets close. This is more like basting than putting them in perpendicular, but I do that, too, sometimes. It just depends on what seems to work best at the moment. For bindings, I'm sold on Elmer's school glue, and I may start using it more for piecing as well.

I am a horizontal quilter...easier to sew up almost to the pin, and then take out before sewing into it.

I guess I do it both ways, have never really paid attention. I didn't realize there might be more slippage for horizontal pinning for some.

Perpendicular. It would be hard to sew if they were parallel and the fabric could slip. I too have learned to pin in the seam and on both sides.
