I love to see black in quilt blocks but am hesitant to use it. What is best? Solids especially. Would it fade if washed a lot? I make a twin quilt for my D when she was in college with cheater blocks, not a lot of black but it did fade a lot.

I've used timeless treasures super black. It's twice dyed and doesn't seem to fade that much.

kona cotton solids black also holds up well in the wash.

HI Jodie! I use sometimes some salt thrown into the rinse water & let the fabric in the water for several minutes.

Another thing you could do is to buy I'm pretty sure it's from Shout. It called, "Shout Color Catchers" it's like a sheet softener, but its to catch bleeding colors.

Hopefully you can find it in your stores...

I have good luck with Kona Black, and Color Catchers, although I havent really had to use it much for the black.

Kona Black, holds up well, little fading, nice fabric to work with.

I use both Kona black and black batik. Have one bolt of black batik left.

This may not be a popular response but ....because black 100 percent cotton really does not stay black over time especially in a quilt that will be washed many many times, You may want to consider using a 50/50 blend when using black . The poly will hold its color better than cotton.
I have used poly blends for some high use quilts , where black is a big component.

I know a lady that owns a fabric shop in Rapid City and she puts black in every quilt she makes even if it just a little bit. I have found that it really adds to a quilt to do that.

I use Shout Color Catchers with my quilts, black or not, just in case something runs. Works every time!
