When you buy on impulse
 

Today I went to Hancocks, just to get a yard of fabric for a binding. I fell in love with a fabric and had to buy it. I also bought another fabric to go with it. So thinking of a 2 fabric quilt. When you buy on impulse, with no particular pattern in mind, how many yards do you buy. I make king size quilts, so I bought 5 yards of each fabric. So now I am officially a fabric junkie.

When I buy on impulse it's when I see a small amount on a bolt that I like. Can always make a quick little doll quilt or (?)

3-5 yards. Sometimes whatever is left on the bolt bc I want it all. Very infrequently impulse buy though.

At least 3 yards, most of the time. That way I have enough for most projects I would want to use it in. I have a good stash with a wide variety of prints so I can usually make anything I want when I think of it.

I'm matching fabrics and I can't stop! My motto!

I usually buy 2-3 yards. Lately most quilts I have been making are twin size for grandbabies. I am horrible about impulse buying and becoming disabled has not cramped my style!! I can still shop on line during the bad days!! I have joined the fabric moratorium, but not sure how much longer I can hang in there!! I have been much better tho

When building my stash I bought in terms of how many fabrics in a quilt top. I make large bed size quilts and fiqure the top will take approximately ten yards. Just divide the yardage by the number of different fabrics that will be used. Most of my quilt tops turn out to have two, three, five or are scrappy. The exception is if a background fabric is used subtract the yardage from the original ten yards.

I buy 6 or more yards at a time. I want to be able to make about anything I decide to do. I don't try to match fabrics in the store. I just hope when I get it home I will have some fabrics that will match it.

If I LOVE the fabric I will get 6 yards. If I like it a lot then 3 yards.

3 yards if it is a great focus or blender fabric. 7 yards if it will make a great backing and borders. Fat quarters I like I buy four of the same fabric. The last few years I've been buying mostly pre cuts. They are easier to store and less cutting for me.

Where I shop, they have layaway. I buy what I might need immediately and layaway two to three times the amount. I am so fortunate they allow this. If I use it immedately and really like it I usually go back and get two to three more yards.

I make king size also, so I buy 4-6 yards, depending on how much I like it & what I envision will go with it & whether I have that in my stash. I'd rather have too much, then not enough.

If making clothes i get three yards. You can make anything with three yards. Quilts i get a little more then what the pattren calls for.

I start at 5 yds-but if it's close to the end of bolt I will take it all. The problems I encounter with fabric purchasing is there are to many fabrics that coordinate. And I usually buy them all : ) Well now that explains why I needed a 22ft box truck to move. But I have done very good this last 18 months -I have only bought 2 yds of pastel pink for binding and 3 yds of a print I could not live without -that I added to my 2 tons of other fabrics I couldn't live with out. But I;m back on the wagon (til the next CLWO fabric spots me)

I usually buy three yards if I LOVE the fabric. If I want it for backing I buy more.

When a fabric practically jumps into my lap, I buy- usually 2-3 yds. I once bought a piece of fabric at a great price, so I bought 8 yards to have enough for a backing. Well, don't you know that fabric wanted to take center stage on a raffle quilt I made for my church. My fabrics speak to me and I try to listen. LOL. That may sound crazy to some, however, I had the resources then to purchase larger pieces of fabric - now that we are trying to live on Social Security, I am grateful that I bought that fabric when I was working. I just finished a twin-size quilt for our DGD and I used all fabrics from my stash - now to check to see if I have enough for a backing. Will do my best to post photo at some point in the future, although I'm having shoulder surgery in 2 days, so I won't be doing much quilting for a bit.

LOL! I like to make quilts with several different fabrics, so my issue is seeing a whole line sitting there on the shelf together looking so pretty and co-ordinated, and I want the whole line! So I like to get 1/2 a yard of my favorite 4-10 fabrics (I often do 8 fabrics), plus extra for borders and binding in my favorites. Yeah, on Thursday I went to JoAnn's to use my 60% off coupon for stablizer and ended up getting 17 yards of quilting fabric because it was on sale and looking so pretty there all together on the shelf! LOL! I didn't mention it to DH. Not that I think he would mind, but he'd laugh at me! I'm such a sucker! JoAnn's saw me comming, that's why they sent me that darn coupon!

I'm terrible for shopping the "sale" material. I believe anything $2.50 and under is "all" mine. I have tons of semi-bolts of material just sitting around waiting to match up with something.

I bought 8 years of St. Pat four leaf clover material for $1.00 a yard recently. Last week I went to Walmart and their Easter material was on sale for $.75. You guessed it. I have about 20 yards of bunnies and eggs.

Fat quarters were on sale a few weeks ago. I thought I would take advantage of the sale so I would have a nice supply of different fabrics on hand for various projects. I started piling them into my cart, not paying any attention to how many were stacking up....... I went down the row for all the pinks, then all the greens, then the blues, etc., picking the ones I really liked (through ALL the colors). When I went to check out I had 70 fat quarters, and I could not put any of them back. Just had to have every one of them. Oh well, that should sufice for a while. tee hee

pat625-- i'm on the fabric moratorium, too. i am 'the bad example' so they asked me to stay, giggle. oh, i always wanted to be a bad girl". it seems if you tell me no i just go and do it. that's how i got my tatoo and belly ring. lol tmi??

I usually buy at least 2 yards

I dont do this anymore as I am not sure when I will use it and over the years my tastes change and then I cant use it in the quilts. What I do though is buy threads needles and blades for the rotary cutter. These are all items I will need and when I retire will not be able to afford as much so I stock up now.

5 yards- I like the way you think! Buying on a whim is the fun of it!

Oh this so sounds like me...I'm afraid you are hooked! I buy about 3 yds of fabric I just HAVE to have most of the time.

When I first started quilting, I would buy a quarter yard of the fabrics that I liked. Rarely would I get a full yard. Well, here I am many years later with lots of variety, but not much of any one thing. Well at least until 2009. That is when I told myself that it would be at least 2 yards or not at all. Sometimes I even get 3 yards. I still do a lot of scrappy quilts, but at least have the ability to do something more controlled if I wish.

I originally bought 1 yard of a fabric I liked. Then I cut down to 1/2 yard. But then I found that I was missing lighter coordinating colors, so I usually get 2 yards of those.

If it's something that I know is for a single quilt, I try to get enough for that quilt. I rarely make anything smaller than queen size, except for baby quilts. Even the quilt for my parents' double bed is queen to king size. When they are no longer with us, it will fit the larger beds that most people have. I just wanted it to be small enough that it didn't drag on the floor.

Do you do the secret santa swap?? We can always use more company in the Naughty Corner..which ended the season as a bar!! LOL

Pat625- Buying on line is fun bc you can do it in your jamies, you hang in there and go girl! Quilting is what keeps us going on "bad days".

I really like scrappy quilts and that's what I make the most of, so I almost always only get half-yards of fabrics when I'm buying on a whim. One yard if it's something I think I will use in more than one quilt; and rarely more than that, although I've gone all the way up to 10 yards when it's something that see that I get that "MUST OWN LIFETIME SUPPLY OF THIS!!" feeling about. (There's only been two fabrics I've bought that much of on a whim though, and I still have several yards of both left and don't regret buying a single inch of either.)

One of the LQS here sells half-yard precut batiks...ohhh that table is SO HARD to walk away from!! I want them all! I don't think I'll ever get tired of batiks.
