i've only been to 3 shows this fall, and i noticed that there were a lot more art quilts/modern quilts with overall machine quilting.

I am another one that prefers the patchwork quilts and hand quilted....

It's a good thing that there is plenty for all of us to admire!

There was a recent newspaper article regarding the Houston Quilt Show. It was noted that this year more traditional quilts won than art quilts.

I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to quilting. Nothing wrong with machine quilting either, but I'm not really into art quilts. I can admire them, but my brain just doesn't work that way.

And honestly, I've seen some that left me shaking my head. Art or not, poor workmanship is just that POOR!

The Houston Quilt show had tons of embellished and artistic quilts. Although they are beautiful I am old fashioned and would like to see shows with traditional quilting. They are even using Swarvorski chrystals to embellish with now.

I love to see the artistic ones, but my favorites are still the traditional ones.

The art quilts are interestng to look at, but I really prefer traditional quilts. I'll be interested to see if there's a noticeable decline in the number of pieced quilts at the yearly quilt show in Tucson this coming January. I hope not!!

I don't give a hoot, I like them all.

I am not an expert at all...very new to quilting...but when I went to the quilt show last week it seemed like almost all are done by a long arm. I don't recall many of the quilts being tied or regular machine quilt. There were a lot of traditional ones as well as the new trendy ones.

I to miss the traditional quilts I have quit going to shows as around here they all seem to be quilted by one or two people even our local fair one person gets paid to do the quilting and those end up being the only quilts to get a ribbon the quilting is beatiful but I prefer to see each persons own work and with longarm quilting that is gone so
quilt shows does not excite me anymore

I agree. I can't imagine curling up and getting comfortable with most of those art quits.

I don't think I am very happy about this trend. And this is just MY opinion!

Well, having just gone to the biggest quilt show in the world, I have to respectfully disagree. There were lots of art quilts, sure, but there were also lots of traditional quilts too. And as I remember it, there were more traditional big winners as "art" quilts. There were a lot of embellished traditional quilts, but they were still pieced.

And there is another thread about prize-winning hand quilted winners at the show.

But some of you sound like my mother who told me that "Quilts that are made by machine aren't made with love like ones made by hand". My response to that was "Well, clothes that are washed in a machine aren't washed with love like clothes that are hand washed and beat on rocks in the river, and you'll NEVER get another quilt from me".
