where can I buy a zipper that will ship fast?

Hello.... my LQS has classes to make duffle bags and I am excited to make a couple. The pattern calls out a #3 plastic zipper - but the shop doesn't have them :(

I looked on Amazon and I can't find any. Do you guys have a suggestion on where I can get this that will ship fast? My class is Wednesday

JustRetired 06-01-2017 04:52 PM

Wawak

Wawak has good prices, fast shipping. I have been very happy with them for zippers and thread.

No suggestions, other than the obvious .... google around LQS', Amazon, eBay, etc.
I know there is one company that makes a lot of bag patterns and also sells all the required hardware. But sorry, I have no clue what the name of it is.

More so, I feel for you and am just shaking my head at your LQS and others that offer a class,
but then do not have the supplies required.

Totally inept and irresponsible .... yes, JIMHO.
Just seems so wrong.

To be quite frank, no matter how much I wanted to make the bag (or a different class project),
I think I would boycott their class, when they did not sell the required parts or that it was not locally available. Again ... JIMHO!

Mine too. Why have the class if the supplies aren't available.

I have to agree. Bad planning on their part. Stupid business plan, too.

What pattern are you using for the duffle bag?

Pardon my ignorance, but I do not know what #3 refers to. When I googled for it, a #3 came in different lengths. Having shopped in thrift stores that took in a lot from cottage industries in the area, I have zippers in all lengths and types, but have never seen one designated by a number for anything but length.

JustRetired 06-01-2017 07:52 PM

I believe it has to do with the tooth size of the zipper

sewbizgirl 06-01-2017 08:03 PM

I love Zipperstop and they are always fast. They are an old family business in NYC.

I second Zipperstop. Never had a problem or issue with any order placed.
Another thought, if you are unable to find the size and length of zipper you need in time, maybe go to a thrift store and look for jackets with zippers. You may find one the right size and length you need, at a good price maybe, all you would have to do is remove from jacket. It isn't hard to do with a seam ripper and a bit of patience. Not as good as finding a new one, but a "last ditch" approach.

wow! thanks everyone :) I have some leads.

The LQS is out of the pattern now as well - will have it Wednesday. But I know the instructor has a pattern and has taught the class several times so she will cover me during class

Check with Small Town Stitches in Seymour, they are teaching that class as well.

I have started using ZipperIsland. Zipperstop took 3 months to send my order the last time I shopped with them!

I found lots of #3 zippers on Amazon, many with Prime shipping. You may not find the color or length you want though...

Thanks everyone I am trying Wawak Sewing supplies.... lets hope they get here in time

Thanks Kathy for the tip on the Seymour store - I had already placed my order by time I saw your suggestion

For my duffle, I bought a 30" separating zipper, because that is what I could find. I just stitched over the zipper many times by hand, with a double threaded needle, at what would be the open end at the desired length. Still works great nine years later

Thank you.

I got my larger ones, like you would use for a duffle bag at an upholstery store. I made quilted zipper cases for my church's bells for the bell choir. They came in hard cases but were being a bit mauled. The covers remonded those using them to be careful and were colorful. The upholstery store had lots of choices too.

While I cannot help with a source for the correct zipper, I did find this information on the website thezipperlady.com:

Toothed: #3, #5, #8, #10, #15, #20. The number denotes approximately how wide the teeth are across when closed.

I used to use the homesew for a lot of things. Just went to their site and in the free downloads they have the most perfect scrubby. I LOVE the two-sided ones and they can be tossed in the wash as needed.
Thank you for posting the site.

thanks everyone!! I am learning about all kinds of new places to shop :)

Onebyone 06-03-2017 07:35 AM

Most times the bigger teeth zippers are cheap to tear out of thrift store bags. I don't care about the bag so I rip it out.

I needed several duffel bags for a kids camp so I made the one yard tote bag but made it long and wide. Added the zipper and webbing around for the handles. Boxed the ends and was done in a flash. The kids are still using them for overnight bags. I like making bags, they are always useful and well received.

klswift 06-03-2017 05:12 PM

Isn't it possible to use another sport zipper? They have thicker teeth and come in a variety of lengths.

AudreyB 06-03-2017 08:24 PM

Home Sew has zippers and ships fast. I've not bought zippers and am not familiar with the terminology, but they may have what you want. Their shipping is fast and good. www.homesew.com
