It was a large sheet with slots 2 1/2 inches apart. You could cut accurate 2 1/2 in strips in just seconds with this ruler, template, cutting tool or whatever it's called. It looked like the measurements were 24x24. I found something similar on the Quilt in Day website: http://www.quiltinaday.com/shoponlin...lay.asp?i=1884 but I know what Eleanor used was larger because she folded her fabric in half and was able to cut the entire length of fabric and it was also square. While I was looking I also found this great resource: http://www.softexpressions.com/softw...ndexRulers.php I hope someone knows where to find this because it would certainly save a lot of time while ensuring accuracy. Thanks for any help you can give me. |
I 2 sizes and had completely forgotten about them as I never had luck using them. Thanks for the great tutorial

If you can't find the Shape Cut by June Tailor, let me know. It is made in Richfield, WI, about 5 mi north of my house. I can always get it around here.

Thanks Johanna,
I found I could buy it online at Joann Fabrics. I hope I can use my 50% off coupon online. I don't usually shop there online but when I went to their website I found this size (20x23) was only available online. |
June Taylor .com

Joann's has them; quilt shops have them; Hobby Lobby has them cheaper than quilt shops. Use a coupon and go to Joann's. If you cannot wait, go to Hobby Lobby, who, by the way, has 40% e-mail coupons every week.
|
Saw them at Joannes and Michaels.
Michaels was cheaper and I had a coupon. |
Is your coupon for in store purchases only or can it be used online? The closest quilt shop I have is 1 1/2 hours away so I buy most of my items online. This sounds like something I'd like to add to my collection of tools. Check your coupon. If it says "Online Only" or "Instore and Online" you can use this coupon online. |
I found mine at a yard sale several years ago. No instructions so didn't know about cutting diamonds until after watching the tape. I use mine for making strips, I put colored tape to help me found my correct measurement. It's a great tool.
|
I have one of these tools and no matter how careful I am, my strips still get a slight waffle or wave in the middle. Any suggestions?
|
JoAnns online coupon SavgSe136. 40% off :-P

Make sure that before you double fold your fabric to start cutting, that you have it even at the left edge, then when you do start to cut, hold down on Your ruler top firmly, so your fabric doesn't shift.
I don't know how I cut strips befor I found the June Taylor shape cutter, but it is wonderful. |
I saw the same show spiffy is talking about and I too liked that ruler she was using. It was not the JT Shape Cut or the Shape Cut Pro. It was a square---looked to be at least 20 X 20 and only had the 2 1/2 inch slits. I thought it would be really neat since you cut so many 2 1/2 strips but haven't been able to find that particular ruler either. Must not be made any more.
|
I saw that show too, and I'm pretty sure it was the June Tailor ruler. The slots are actually 1/2 inch apart and it works great once you get onto it.
|
I bought something similar at Wal-Mart.

OR 2)tearing down the grainline method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqxxt...ature=related. Here is a PDF you can print out too: http://www.sewing.org/files/guidelin...bric_grain.pdf I have 2 different styles of the June Tailor tools. I love them & have used them for strip cutting, cutting bias, & also fringe on fleece or rag quilts. Nancy zieman has a short video on cutting the fleece using this tool, which was faster then how I used to do it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSLBVCCuv6s. I bought one @ walmart (before the 2008 crash which has caused my local store to get rid of everything sewing & crafting), the other @ Joann's with a 50% off coupon. I never paid over $20 for either. One is about 24" square, so covers the WOF folded once. The second is a diamond cut. Even though the big ruler has the markings, I saw a neat demo @ a quilt show on folding a fabric back for a border & this was cheaper & more versatile to do the same concept. If I find the link I will post it. |

June Taylor makes a ruler with slots 1/2 in apart :D
|
Elenor Burns sells them herself at her shop and I think you can only get it on line and I think its a June Taylor but the big one. Saw it at the show here last fall in her booth was 69.00 I believe.

Cabinfever & Everyone who else who took the time to share tips, I just
purchased this same ruler the other day & now I have a better idea of how to play with it....thanks very much. |

Thanks everyone for responding to my delima. I now have some good ideas. I will keepyou posted on whether I master this cut or not.

Got one at JoAnn's last year with 50% off coupon!
I LOVE IT!!! Was a little bit timid to use it at first...NOW wouldn't be without it!!! |
I just came back from Joann's & my store in calif has the long one on clearance for 75% off today. If Joann's won't be carrying some of them they may be clearancing (sp?) elsewhere as well. I noticed only the long ones were on clearance, it was about 8" x 24"; & it's no longer shown on the JT website. When I saw it @ the store, I noticed the slots were only about 18" long of the full 24" ruler, so perhaps since it will not cut Width of fabric (WOF)in one pass, they weren't popular. It was 75% off. For those who think they might like to give it a try, this might be a good start. Also, I think Joann's would let you return any of their rulers within 60 days if you don't like it; you could ask first.
Another review of these tools, where she suggests the best rotary cutter was the Fiskars 28mm for success with the slots. http://www.quiltersreview.com/articl...t/010709_a.asp I forgot to mention you DO really need to be cutting straight upright not leaning off to one side with your rotary blade. Someone else posted the JT website for video demos & you can also search in general & find others on youtube too. There are always creative people out there that will think of new ways to use tools, that even the mfr. never thought of. |
I have the 12" x 12" , cuts in 1/2" increments, I wish I had a bigger one. All I found at the time.
|
Hi all, I was having trouble cutting without the elbow in the middle so I purchased a strip cutting machine for over $50.00, I also used a coupon. It was ok but you have to be very careful how you feed the fabric. I then purchased the June Taylor rulers and MAN am I glad. They are the only rulers I have used for a while now and I just love them. You do need to make sure that the fabric is straight when you start cutting. The blade does need to be straight in the slot and and sideways like Cabinfever mentioned. I use my regular rotary cutter and no problems. Good luck.

If you try to look up June's stuff, the correct spelling of her last name is T A I L O R .

They have it at my walmart in the fabric department

I found this at Wal-Mart, Hancock's, Hobby Lobby. Try Sewing Center's where you live.

I found one at Wal-Mart

After learning about June Tailor rulers in this thread and getting the link to her videos I watched every one of them.
I've always had trouble getting half and quarter square triangles right and I was impressed with her ruler used to make these pieces. I found one at Walmart on Friday for $11.99 and I was thrilled. This morning I made 16 perfect half square triangle blocks without having to rip any out. You can bet I'll be stocking up on June Tailor rulers when I come across them at a reasonable price! |
