I think that whatever is comfortable for you is the right place. Somedays set farther away than others or off to the side

You should be sitting about 6 inches from the front of the machine and your eye should be in front of the sewing needle. I have found that a lot of people try to sit in front of the middle of the machine. NO NO You stitching will be more acurate when in front of the needle. If need be move the machine to the right. I would get an adjustable chair. I use an old desk and it works wonderfully.

Mine sits at the edge of the table. I have room on both sides so I can cut my fabric and hold my computer.

I had bought a portable fold-down type non-vintage table on ebay for my featherweight several several years ago. I was terribly disappointed in the quality of construction. (Very wobbly!)
My dad built this one with a maple top.
Fortunately, I have a few other machines that fit the opening as well!
He also made the cutout so that it can be replaced to make a solid top if I want to use the table for something other than sewing.

However, I've never taken the time to not sew on it long enough to put a finish on it!

I really like this. Your dad did a great job. How tall is it from floor to top of table?

I have a Sapphire in a Horn table. The needle is 8" from the front edge.

Here is what my husband made from an old table made from a door. It has support under the door (piece of wood my dad put on it a long time ago) and legs. He made a shelf for my JUki and it works wonderfully for any machine

It looks like you used the Juki's own surround? and then covered it too with the clear plastic top so there's no place for thread or fuzz or whatever to get into the crack? That is a good idea and it might help with my Janome which has no sharp corners on the bed, and even to the left of the needle, that area slopes down.

What a nice machine, too. It looks like you could drive a truck through the harp! I'm jealous!
