I saw a quilt with a block that is part log cabin and part half trangle. I dont know the name of it but I am trying to find it so i cna get the pattern.

If you use the half square triangle in the middle, you can just build the log cabin strips around it til you get the size you want


I bet this is pretty, would make a smoother light/dark transition

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I just finished making a quilt with a diamond in the center with strips around it in a log cabin style. I got the directions from modafabrics.com and it's called "Flutterby".
