Where to find certain fabrics?

Hello all. As I posted in the introduction page, I am new to quilting. I have been to several classes, watched innumerable YouTube videos, and practiced everything for hours and hours. I have finally decided what my first project is going to be and what fabric I want to use. I was in a quilt shop a few weeks ago and ran across a Moda collection that I love. I bought everything they had of it. I looked it up online and ordered the other pieces that I could find. There are 2 more that I want, but can't find anywhere that has them for sale. Are there any places online that I should check that might not come up on Google searches? I assume I'm going to have to go outside of the collection, but I'd rather not. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What fabric are you looking for? Have you tried Etsy and eBay?

I have found that I like the results much better when I supplement a particular line with outside fabrics. It makes the quilt less static.

My go-to sources are fabrics.com, Fat Quarter Shop, Keepsake Quilting. However, I agree with Lisa. Supplementing a line of fabrics with some from outside that line can add a lot of interest. Since you are looking for Moda, have you checked the Moda website?

Welcome to the board!! As others have mentioned do look at other lines within the manufacturer. I love French General from Moda. So, if I’m short a fabric from say La Vie En Rouge, I will look to see what’s available in different French General Line and they work well together because I have found the colors to be consistent within a specific line. Don’t forget to show us your finished project !

Count me in!! I agree with supplementing with fabric outside of that line. I sew bindings on professionally and find that client quilts that are made entirely from one single line of fabric are not as interesting as quilts made from multiple lines of fabric.

However, having said that, if you still want those particular pieces of fabric, search for the specific sku number for the fabric prints you want, not just the manufacturer and line names. You can usually find the sku number on the Moda website.

It is the Eliza's Indigo collection.

meyert 10-22-2018 01:48 PM

I was going to suggest Fabric.com and etsy I have found some good items on both of them.

I have also just googled the Moda line and was able to find other shops that have what I am looking for

If you provide the name I may have time to look. I am always up for looking at fabric :)

Good Luck

I have searched Moda and by the sku. No luck. Everyone seems to be out of these two. I have no problem going outside of the collection. My only fear is that I am not smart enough to pick something that flows with it.

Have you tried Quiltshops.com? They've been a big help to me at times.

It is 31500-11 of Eliza's Indigo by Betsy Chutchian. FYI: quiltersanon.com has it listed, but messaged me that it was out of stock after I ordered it.

dudequilter 10-22-2018 02:37 PM

Yes! That is where I got some of the others .

Not sure which is which... but they have some

meyert beat me to it. I was going to link that Etsy shop. They have a good selection at a good price.

dudequilter 10-22-2018 04:37 PM

Thank you all for the ideas. I've looked at all of those sites. They are missing the one I need too.

quiltingshorttimer 10-22-2018 06:29 PM

your local quilt shop (LQS)is usually able to have someone help you with selecting other fabrics outside the Moda line that would work well with the fabrics you have selected.

sewbizgirl 10-22-2018 06:42 PM

It looks like civil war fabric. The site, “Piecing the Past” has lots of great civil war fabric. They may have the one you are looking for, or for sure would have others that could go with it. If you need help, Debbie is the site owner and is very helpful.

Welcome to the QB!

I have found discontinued fabrics at quiltfabriccloseouts.com, thousandsofbolts.com, fabricworm.com, jellyrollfabrics.com, 5bucksayard.com, fabrichotel.com and hartsfabric.com. My biggest score was on this board in the "searching for" section where someone had 5 yards of a fabric for which I was looking. Good luck!

JulieR 10-23-2018 04:59 AM

Ask your LQS to order what you need for you. My LQS is always on board to order more of something for me.
Good luck!

Getting the right fabric is a problem many of us have experienced. I think it might be particularly hard on new quilters. A lot of people don't understand that fabric is ever-changing. New lines and colors come out several times every year, the typical brown of one time period isn't the same in the next time period. While sometimes you can indeed find more of something (especially if it is current) I treat fabric as a "one and done" if you don't get it right then chances are very good you won't find it again.

A lot of quilts in the magazines are designed specifically to go with particular lines of fabric, but you don't have to use those fabrics -- you can choose something close or something entirely different. I have one friend who has a very vivid sense of color, her selections when she took a class were always very different than the teacher or the other participants, but her quilts always looked like her quilts, while the other class participants projects basically just looked like the teacher's (which isn't necessarily a bad thing!).

Maybe the worst thing about fabric is when you have something in your head and then trying to find it... it may or may not exist. Fortunately there are now fabric printing options like Spoonflower.

Me, I mostly work in "scrap" quilts and am more challenged trying to keep myself to the same 3-6 fabrics for a single quilt. Scrap quilts can be very planned, with very small range of colors or fabric themes or whatever. The nice thing for me is if you throw enough fabric at it, each piece becomes less important and so you don't have to find the perfect fabric. The bad thing is instead of just going out and buying 6 pieces of fabric, I have to go through thousands of different pieces and I have to store those pieces so there is always at least two sides to any issue.

We all know what we like but it can be really hard to learn why you like what you like. For me I like to see differences in scale (the size of the pattern) between one piece and the next. I have vision issues and I like contrast which can be light/dark or color range. Some people like the watercolor effect and blurring. So when you are confronted with a "I like this but can't find that fabric" try to analyze what it is you like or at least what the original designer selected, so maybe you need a "large floral with a lot of cream background" or a "tiny little print of indigo on tan". And keep in the back of your mind that the designer probably could only use fabric from that line and might have really wanted something completely different!

Several months ago someone posted this website in trying to find a specific fabric so you also might check: http://www.missingfabrics.com/
Good luck.

joe'smom 10-24-2018 07:39 AM

What pattern are you using for your quilt? Will you have enough fabric to make the quilt without the two fabrics you are missing from the collection?

Ariannaquilts 10-24-2018 07:47 AM

Usually, at least this is my take on this if a designer creates a line of fabric you can pretty much use one line with another. Because Betsy Chutchian does the 1800 reproduction her next or possibly previous line may have something. I found many from the indigo line but not the sku that you reference just by Google. My go to with her fabrics is Hancock of Paducah they have the Handiwork line so you may find something there. Good luck and welcome to the board!

I've found that www.fabshophop.com has numerous quilt shops in their hop. If you go to their webpage, just under their name, there is several choices to choose from, pick fabric search and enter your request. It will search all the shops and list them for you. While you're there, join the shop hop and have fun exploring all the online stores. Good luck in your search.
