I used to have a large kitchen floor where I could lay out a big king size backing and layer my quilts. Sigh...no more. I sold that house and now live in a small apartment.
I have no free floor space to speak of to lay a backing out on. So I bought some 1.5" thick styrofoam board (the blue kind). I lay them on top of my queen size bed and pin my backing flat and taut to them. No more accidentally pinning to the mattress. |
I live in a subdivision that has a clubhouse. I push a bunch of the folding tables together and put my quilts together in there sometimes with the help of my DM or a neighbor.

I use my dining room table. It works rather well but I wish it was higher. I sometimes have to sit down because my back screams out in pain after awhile. lol

I either spray baste, or use Sharon Schamber's pinless method, which she demos here:

On the floor but your idea sounds better.

Sounds like you have found a solution. I usually use the kitchen table, the living room floor (has a rug but a low pile one, so it works) or I go to a friends house. She has two huge folding tables. We put them together side by side and it works.

I recently bought myself a folding table, 8ft x 30in, after struggling with something on the floor, and suffering for 3 days afterwards. Never again will I crawl on the floor.

At work in the lunch room. I push a bunch of tables together.

I do it on the wall of my hallway. I purposely did not put anything on that wall. Because I am standing and comfortable I add spray and many pins, so my backs are turning out a lot better.
