On another note, typically the ties are put where seams meet,
for better stability and easier wear on your quilt.

I made the mistake of tying a quilt only in the middle of my squares. During regular use, they began to tear through. Now if I only want ties to show in the middle, I do that, then either, SID around the blocks, or tie over the seams to the back so the little ties are on the back of the quilt to actually help hold the quilt on the bed. Do not be stingy with your knots. There are several types of knots used for this, I prefer to stitch down from the top, move over 1/4”and come back up, repeat, then tie a “surgeons knot”, and have never had one untie.

That depends mostly on the string. We used pearl cotton once and had to re-do the entire thing. It is way to slippery to really hold a good knot.

When I did the Eleanor Burns QIAD class way back in the early 90s, we used embroidery floss.
Mine was a queen-sized quilt and it stayed together through many washings.

Unfortunately, it faded dreadfully and finally retired it. :(
