I am cleaning my sewing room, sa much as I can with all the stuff that's in it. I have several UFO's that are in piles...I did use shoe boxes but it's to hard to find them and know whats in them. I have no more shelf space so what do you do   :D :D

Quilter101 11-11-2008 09:20 AM

If you aren't real attached send them to me  Or ebay....

fabricluvr 11-11-2008 09:48 AM

i use foam board. i have three large projects in progress and i just keep them laid out on a piece of foam board. then i stack the foam board. i'm thinking of putting up some shelving brackets to put them on to get them off of the table.

mary quite contrary 11-11-2008 09:53 AM

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest something really really radical.

Finish them.

LOL Don't go looking at one of my posts where I put a picture of some of my UFO's.

Kara 11-11-2008 10:25 AM

I guess my answer would depend on how attached you are to these UFO's.... If not too attached, find a quick-finish method and send to local shelters, clothing banks, etc.

If you're attached, finish and share with people you love who would appreciate them.

As far as storage of UFO's... I guess I'm fortunate, there really aren't any UFO's that hang around here. There's the random pieces where I tried something new, but I even try to finish them, even if it's a pillow for the kids. Unless it's really awful, then the trash can is a good place.

Patty44 11-11-2008 10:30 AM

I have been finishing some of my UFO's,making them into table runners and plan to give them for Christmas. That way I can practice my hand quilting. I can finsh them if they are not too big. I had a double wedding ring with howls in the middle of the block. I finshed for a frind who was making me a mule plack. She has some kind of saw and makes things with wood. I have it all done except the binding.

Knot Sew 11-11-2008 02:04 PM

i bought some plastic shoe boxes, I have 4 UFO's in these...I have a cirlce jean quilt tha t is in a box; its to big for the regular ones...I bought another plastic thingy with 3 draws. for small pieces of fabric. I bought a big box of gallon plastic bags for all the squares ect that are cut up.......i have some scrap wood and am making a mini ladder for strips. This gets most of them out where I can see whats there. I also have several completed quilt tops I will finish when I can get a lot more batting. Maybe I will get finished cleaning tomorrow :D

Craftybug 11-11-2008 02:09 PM

Ruth, you know those pastic bins that are flat and they roll under the bed? I think they call them sweaters storage bins, those will be perfect because you can stack them one on top of the other and they are not as bulky as the storage bins.

Cathe 11-11-2008 03:25 PM

Two big Rubbermaid totes in the attic and a 3' stack in the sewing room.

Mary QC, you crack me up. But that is a very good suggestion.

I'm gonna agree with Mary QC.....:-)

I have my already "sandwiched" UFO's on my son's bed. They used to be on the treadmill in the family room (where I sew) They may end up back here again. That treadmill makes a great place to store the "to be quilted" projects! It even adds color to the room! The almost completed tops are folded and stored in a clear rubbermaid tub (66 qt or larger size) some of them have a ziploc bag with them with the fabrics to finish the tops. My blocks are in ziploc bags in a second UFO Tub. Sad that I have 2 tubs. I need to get to work!!!

Knot Sew 11-12-2008 04:59 AM

IMy plan is to finish them all, but first i need to be able to find them with their attendant pieces. I do work on them, there are not that many. I had pieces, and fabric and other stuff piled on every flat surface....and walking was a hazard  The strips, I am still thinking on that one

GailG 11-12-2008 06:51 AM

Yea, Ruth. Nothing like getting all tangled up in pieces that are "piled" up on the floor. Last week I got hung up in a bunch of binding that had been cut the wrong width. It was waiting to be wrapped around a piece of cardboard to be used in another project. Yikes. I did catch myself before I hit the floor. We quilters can be experts in making piles.

Quilting Aggi 11-12-2008 07:44 AM

I also like using the 12 x 12 plastic containers you use for scrapbooking.. they are also fairly flat, (hmm about a 3 inch height to them) they are see through and keep your projects flat.

oooh I got three of those, and 2 of them are filled with UFOs that are too big for the 12 x 12 containers!! One of my New Year's goals for 2009 is to tackle some of those UFOs.. they are getting out of hand now!! LOL

Welllllll.....most of mine are tops, and I have them in a nice cabinet from IKEA that has glass doors so I can enjoy the pretty colors.
As for the strips - how about putting them on some hangers? They won't get too wrinkled up that way.

Kyiav10 11-12-2008 01:47 PM

I am trying to finish what I have started before I start another one. I have the train quilt in the frame still! Plus a baby quilt that I am machine quilting. And like three others started. So I want to finish these before I start another.

Thanks !!! I found one of those clear plastic hangers that come with garments from the department store. I put the binding strips (that were ironed in half ready to apply) in the little "recesses" on the shoulder-part of the hanger. Terrible sentence, but you get the picture, huh.

my god, what have we all done? as soon as my kids moved out, 20+ years ago, i filled their rooms and closets with 'stuff' and it's all still there. i have those plastic three-drawer units and the huge tubs and a gazillion dresser drawers filled with fabrics, threads, notions, etc. how can there be any left in the world? are we eating something that turns us all into fabric addicts?

This brings me to my DH's comment several years ago. He asked, "Do you realize that as the kids moved out you filled up their space with your STUFF.?" And how right he was !! Our son was the first to leave and I filled his closet with cake decorating supplies and equipment. Then went in all the books. Now, the computer.

The girls' room has the sewing "corner," the "office" things, and all of my tutoring, craft, scrapbooking, etc. Fabric is stored in bins everywhere.

Lucky Patsy's 11-15-2008 07:43 PM

I took out the bottom mattress from the trundle bed in the spare bedroom/sewing room and store projects there in the clear zippered bags that sheets and bedding come in. Barnbum stores all her strips on a ladder!

I hang mine on a wooden clothes drying rack in plain sight, so that they taunt me on a daily basis to finish them!!

So far, it is not working---I have gotten very used to looking at them there!!

My UFOs are multiplying since I've joined QB. The ideas flow and I begin, then another idea comes up, etc. But that's OK. And then someone mentions scrapabooking and I change my cap and get to scrapping for a while. And that's OK, too. I love being here with other people like me.

bebe 08-27-2009 04:55 AM

The one that dies with the most UFO's better be leaving something to me!!!!!

wichypoo 08-27-2009 05:09 AM

I read somewhere,,, that strips are easily stored in those long narrow trays for silverware or knives. know what I mean. Some of those trays stack too. good luck I can't walk through my sewing area either. Husband stored new flooring in that room, yea lucky me.

littlehud 08-27-2009 07:28 PM

Mine are everywhere. Cluttering up my bedroom, where my stash is, and around the sewing area. I am no help. I can't even organize my own.

minstrel 08-28-2009 02:56 AM

I have most of mine in one of those hanging canvas "shelves" that go in your closet, if you know what I mean - the kind that have a hanger to go over your closet rod and are about 4 (5?) feet long and a foot wide with 4 or 5 compartments. That clear as mud? LOL One shelf is good for one project since I mostly do throw sized quilts.

Ninnie 08-28-2009 03:53 AM

I keep mine in a large laundry basket, with lid!
  I sew need to finish some of them!
But not today, I' starting a new quilt!

bebe 08-28-2009 04:29 AM

I have started working on my UFO's after I counted them and have around 25 or so!!!!    :-o Since the middle of July I have completed 3 tops and now working on my 4th. Yeah!!!!!!!

How I get myself motivated to finished them is that I let myself work on something new at the same time. I find if I work on several projects at one time it helps me get away from the boredom. I cannot work on one project forever and a day I need variety.

I am on a roll I plan to complete at least 4 more this clears up some boxes and closet space.!!!!!!

Now my new dilema is coming up with the money to get them quilted   That cost varies for each quilt so now I need to save.

I will post my tops later when my neighbor has time to help me post.

justwannaquilt 08-28-2009 04:38 AM

My problem is not UFO's although I do have two half quilted sanwhiches laying around here! my biggest issue is seeing a pattern I like, going to the fabric store, getting what I want, and then bringing it home and adding it to the "box" the box of never ending fabric and patterns, I went through it the other night and seen what all was in it, holy moly. I have everything from quilts to be made, to fabric for grocery bag totes, fabric for clothes, I even had a half made diaper bag that I started <almost> three years ago!

My new plan, I can not buy ANY fabric (except fabric for halloween costumes which are going to throw a socket in my plan!) until the stuff in "the box" is done! So far so good. I am getting alot of stuff done up, I even have a ghost laying on my table now that needs cut out and sewn but I am feeding the baby and typing instead!! lol

Sue,
That's exactly what I do. I roll the binding on plastic coat hangers with a hand towel over it. The strips cut for different projects go on different coat hangers. Then I hang them pretty close to the folded top (over a coat hanger, too) It's easier to find and see...

RedGarnet222 08-28-2009 03:24 PM

I started finishing my UFO's and unfinished tops this last january. It has whittled it down to something I can live with now. My problem is that I need to go on a batting buying spree instead of fabric. LOL!

The next time they have a good sale, I am going to buy as many as I can and some head. That way, I will have it on hand when the snow fly's and I don't want to go out shopping. I have gotten a nice stash of thread going on now. That took some doing, matching all the quilt tops I have in the wings. But, I am determined .....

Did I mention I went shopping today and bought fabric for another quilt to do this winter? That make seven of those. Plus the six queens I have ready to quilt. And three twins, three wall hangings and that is not counting all of the regular sewing projects I bought the patterns, notions and fabric for.

Just why do we do this to ourselves? LOL! I feel almost overwhelmed with it all.

judee0624 08-28-2009 07:37 PM

:D I have a couple of project boxes, storage style, for two UFOs, then I am using plastic bags that drapes came in for some others. They have zippers so are easy to close up and carry around if necessary - like to find more fabric. Then there are the drawers. I have a son who works at a pizzaria so thanks for that idea.

That sounds so ideal. I just wish I had space in the closet to hang one (or two) of those.

Oh this same topic: Last year about this time, we were issued a challenge to help us tackle our UFOs. Maybe one of those would be in order again. I finished a project that had been in the making since 2000.

pjinflorida 08-28-2009 09:51 PM

Hi Everyone,

I'm a bit confused. In reading some of these post, they are being kept in plastic container/bags. I though you weren't supposed to store quilts, even the ones that aren't quilted yet in plastic.

II have a couple quilts I need to store and was going to get some of that tissue paper that is ok for storing material, i.e. quilt, or ufo's.

Is that a waste? Is plastic ok?

Also where do you get new unused pizza boxes from?

Thanks for your help
Pam
