white batik-does it exist?
I have been on an endless hunt for a white on white batik, and am finding it is almost impossible to find as are off white batiks. I am in need of 7 1/2 yards for background, If I find one it is like 5 yards left. this is very frustrating, even at the quilt craft festival today only 2 booths had bolts and neither had what I needed, very disappointing, may have to wait till road2ca net year to find it. anyone have any good sources as I am at a loss. I have tried batiks plus, batiks etc, canton village, abbymay, fat quarter shop, fabric.com, thousands of bolts, you name it I have searched.

I just did a serach on Hancock of Paducah and Fabric shack and didn't find anything white on white in a batik. Have you checked into doing a search for Hoffmans Watercolors batiks??
You know the 16th Annual Quilt run is coming up. There is a list of 24 stores in So CA you could do a search on and find their e-mail and request if they have any. It will take time or you could call them, the Phone numbers are listed. www.quiltersrun.com |
Try batiks galore online or sew batiks. Not sure what they carry but they are extensive batiks only.
Look near the bottom of this page - http://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php...chstring=batik - are any of those what you need?
Great site Dunster!
Have you tried M&L's in Anaheim? You can call them, they will check for you, and let you know what they have. They might be able to call you when they get in the color you want, also.
I've seen some, just don't remember where. It would have been online. There is a batik only site. It could have been there or on connecting threads. But white on white isn't very common. And neither is any light colored batik.
Since I have seen black on black batiks I am certain there are white on white batiks.
Tonga Meringues are very light, but I wouldn't say white on white. The are what I used in the log cabin in my avatar. If you want a true white on white, you could use a printed muslin, like Moda Muslin Mates or similar.
What I've found is that you can either find cream colored batiks with a yellow hue or light batiks with a grey hue, there are even some with a peach hue. I have enjoyed using the Tonga Lace line which is creams. If you think about it, it can't be a true white batik. There wouldn't be any contrast to show up the design so you can decide which undertone would work best in your quilt. Hancocks of Paducah carried the line.

Flare Fabrics has white batik it's called Tonga Air which is Timeless Treasures fabric

I also have never found a white batik. I ordered one that I thought was cream and when it arrived it was TAN. I was SO disappointed. I just added to my stash. Plus the tear drop design on it was very big and not what I thought when I saw the picture of it online. I may use it for a backing in the future.

This may sound horrid..but i recently successfully bleached some blue batik bc i wanted shades of that color. It worked very well but one batch became white as snow with some dots of blue. Of course it was diluted by about a 1:1 ratio and the batik will lose its color almost immediately so you need to monitor it closely but this is definitely an option especially if you see an almond or even beige/khaki that appeals. It was fun. I was able to get gradated blues out of one fabric for a sky background for a mini quilt.

I don't think a white on white batik is possible. There wouldn't be any contrast. I needed a while batik for a quilt backing and found some at Hancock's, but they were waiting for a shipment that never came. I found something that would work on another site and it worked great, but there was a little gray worked in. Very light as I was afraid it would change the front that has an off-white background fabric. I was afraid the color would show through. It didn't. Oh yes, I needed extra wide fabric.

Anthology batiks has some light, but I don't know if white, batiks also.
There are several posts on this board about looking for a white on white batikm which it seems no one has found yet. Because batiking the fabric is a process (the dyeing and stamping of a pattern onto the fabric) it may have some hint of color albeit it can be a very light tint.
Hoffman sells the fabrics that they use for their batiks in an unprepared state that some buy to dye themselves. Here is the link. Good luck with your search. |

fabric with swatches to view. I have always been able to locate what I am looking for on this website. Good Luck in your search. |
Dolphyngyrl, please let us know when you get your fabric from batiks galore, if it is the white on white batik you are looking for. It would be nice to know there is a source for it, if it is the white you are looking for.

Try Prairie Quilt.com, I found 3 using keywords "white on white batik". All three are 108" wide.
Go to hoffmanfabrics.com and get their phone number. Give them a call and ask if they have such a fabric and which stores locally (southern CA) carry it. Their Customer Service department is usually very helpful.
Try www.fabricfanatics.com they are in Texas and they only sell batiks, they have thousands of bolts.
I bought some white batik at Ginger's Quilt Shop in Upland a year ago, so I know that it does exist.
Thousandsofbolts.com has several. I've gotten numerous batiks from them and all have been top quality.
Just ordered a bolt from my LQS. I can't decide if I actually need two bolts -- I want to use it as the background for a Dear Jane quilt. Don't know the company it is being ordered from but they had a new sample chart -- it had 3 whites -- one was on the gray side, one on the yellow side and one looked "just right".
I have found that the lighter batiks are harder to find than the dark ones. My favorite go to site is www.thousandsofbolts.com. Their quality is marvelous and you can search by batik/colors. No affiliation, just a happy repeat customer of theirs.
Have you tried Batiksplus.com?
I have also been looking for a white on white batik for the background in a DJ quilt so I have been very interested in this thread. Thank you to everyone who responding and gave suggestions of places to look!
