My neighbor has an old treadle sewing machine that they don't want. It's in a cabinet and the name on it is White.
Someone at some point left it out in the rain and the cabinet is not fixable because most of it is missing. I tried the treadle and the machine runs very smooth. They are at the point of just throwing it away. Before they do that I just have to ask if anyone has any idea what to do with it or who might be interested in it? I just hate the thought of just throwing it away.

you are right... shouldn't be just thrown away. wish i had the time for it... would somehow fix it up

Contact a quilt group and ask if anyone would like to have it. I hate seeing sewing machines thrown away when someone could put a few dollars into them and have a useable machine to sew on.

Some consider White treadles to be among the best machines ever made. The TreadleOn group favors them.

If you can give the machine some space to wait, I would try to save it. Perhaps advertise it on FreeCycle in your area.

They tried the free section of Craig's list but haven't had much luck. I have no room or any desire to keep it for myself but hate to toss it. I'll keep looking.

If the cabinet is not repairable, save the irons for a table. Someone will snap them up. Do you have a picture of the machine? I'd gladly pay the shipping if it's one I want. I would never part out a machine if the cabinet can be fixed, but if not, then save the machine.

While it may be expensive to ship an entire machine, is it something you could possibly post and sell parts off? Kind of the last effort before tossing it entirely if there's no one who wants the whole thing. Some parts can be hard to come by that others fixing up Whites are looking for and would be easy to ship. I know I'm still looking for one of the "t-shirt" plates and some other parts for one of my fixer-upper machines. I hate to see a useable old machines trashed too--hope you find it a home!

Could also call around to sewing machine dealerships. Even if they don't want it, they may know retired mechanics or others who collect vintage machines.

Can you give it to Goodwill or Habitat. Those are places that people come to look for stuff like that. Also any church groups!
