White whole cloth help
 

My widowed BIL came for a visit and liked the weight of the guest room quilt. He asked if I would make him a pieced QUEEN size quilt from all white fabrics and how much would I charge him. I gave him a ballpark figure and then I asked if we could look at another way to do it. How about two different patterned white wide backing fabrics, one front and other the back, done into a quilt? He said that would be great. I will be the middle man purchasing of fabric and batting, getting to LAQ and then binding for him- he pays for fabric, batting and quilting. He has seen the fabrics and made the choices.

Now to the batting ---- Since it is all white, what color batting should go in it?

All the major cotton manufacturers do make a white cotton batting. The easiest to get is W&N sold at JAF especially during big coupon days. Watch the price on Thanksgiving or the day after.

It's called Warm & White and JoAnns does carry it. To be honest, I can't tell the difference between W&N & W&W in a white quilt.

To me, though, Warm and Natural makes for a heavy quilt. I'd prefer Quilters Dream white cotton.

Jan, the guest room quilt was my first bed quilt and I did choose Warm & Natural. I had taken it in two bags- one bag in each hand. When I picked it up at LAQ, it was all in one bag and heavier than I recalled. Some guests have taken it off and folded over the quilt rack. But my BIL loved the weight of it. I will take a look at the Quilter's Dream White because the Warm & White is not 100% cotton like the Warm & Natural.

Thanks for all you input. I was hoping someone had used a lot of white on a quilt top or just white on the back and had used a natural color batting with good success. I look forward to more input.

I agree, my favorite batting is the quilters dream line.

I use Warm & Plush for all my quilts. It's an unbleached cotton. I've never had any issue with it not looking white enough in the end. Only time I can tell the difference is when it's wet.

May I suggest Hobbs 80/20 Bleached? Warm without being heavy and will not show off white between the fabrics.

This is a good discussion. I also appreciate learning about the different battings. I usually buy W&N at JoAnns with coupons too so I don't know the differences.

And what a cool idea AUquilter. I always wanted to do a wholecloth with hand quilting but never got around to it. Too many wonderful fabrics keep calling out to me. Please post it when it is finished ok?

I have used natural colored batting in white quilts without it being noticeable in the end. It did Not dim the whiteness of the quilts. If he likes the weight of the guest room quilt I would try to use the same batting... But, if the guest room quilt is pieced, it will be heavier than a wholecloth-- the piecing creates, adds to the weight. So you need to take that into consideration and maybe try to find a heavier batting. Warm & natural is pretty heavy it might still be enough as long as the fabrics you chose are fairly heavy too- not this, lightweight.
