Who Makes the best solid BLACK fabric?
Making a quilt that needs a solid black fabric to show off color. Can't seem to decide which BLACK fabric to buy.
Michael Miller's Jet Black, Solid Black, Kona Black, Robert Kaufman Black, Northcott Black, Maywood Black and the list goes on. HELP, please! |
The last time I used a solid black, it picked up EVERY FUZZY known to man. Now I use a tonal black on black that reads solid. I find Kona to be a bit too heavy of a hand for my taste.
|
I like the intensity of the Michael Miller black - but - in my experience - it shrinks over two inches in width when it is washed/soaked in hot water.
|
I like kona black. I trust it not to bleed, and love the firmness of it

Michael Miller black!! It is beautiful fabric!

Who makes the best black fabric is like asking who makes the best car. It is purely subjective. What one person likes another doesn't and for varying reasons.
Edited to add, Kona cotton is made by Robert Kaufman fabric so I think when you say Kona Black and Kaufman black, is there a difference? I made this quilt using Kona Black. The bright batiks and contrasting thread stands out and shows off the colors quite well but honestly I think any good quality black will do that. |
I prefer Keepsakes Amish Black.

I've heard great things about the Michael Miller black, but haven't tried it yet. I recently bought a kit from Craftsy and it had 13 yd of their solid black (Boundless) in it and it feels great! Liked it so much I just bought more of their Boundless Botanical blenders.

I've used The Dream cotton black from Marshall Dry Goods. Several of my quiltey friends use it as well.

I use Dream Cotton too. I haven't tried the black yet. I have lots of black to use up first. I bought a bolt of the red, blue, green, yellow, and orange. Now I'm filling in with lighter and darker of the colors.

I wandered all around Fabric Depot for at least an hour trying to find the blackest black. I don't remember what I wound up with, but I did find that there was a wide variation, even from bolt to bolt of some of the same brand.

I prefer black that has a tone on tone look because it is richer rather than flat looking. But, I confess, I like all colors in a tone on tone appearance rather than solid solids.
|
I use Kona Black when I need black... but I hate sewing with black...It makes my eyes ache.
|
I learned in a class at Paducah quilt show some years back to not use black thread on black fabric. Use a maroon, hunter green, dark blue or deep purple. When machine quilting the color blends and not noticeable unless very close up to the quilt. Much easier on the eyes to piece and quilt using the color thread especially the thinner thread available now.

Another vote for Michael Miller Jet Black.
|
I, too, like to use the Amish Black from Keepsake Quilting. I usually order it 7 yards at a time so I always have enough on hand.
|
I love Kona.
|
i love a light tonal, one that you have to look to see the the other color. I prefer tonals where ever I need a solid

I always use Konah black, not the fake one at JoAnn, the real Kona by Robert Kaufman.

My quilt shop lady recommended a black fabric by Timeless Treasures and color is called Jet. It is a black, black. I prewashed with a color catcher and there was no bleeding. I really like it a lot.

I found a bit of TT Soho line in black. Beautiful and with a good hand. Unfortunately, not enough for my needs and was told they are not making that line any more?? Bummers. Then I found a really nice Red Rooster black. Again not enough for my quilt. Was told the reason it felt and looked better was because of the higher thread count/psi. Used MM black but was thinner the last time I used it so the hunt was on for the next best. Haven't felt Northcott but really love their fabrics and now a store close to here is carrying their line so that is my next stop on the quest for the best black.
