Quilting is all about artistic expression. So express anyway you want. I am new at Machine quilting, and my results are not technically perfect, but I love to pick the colors and put them together. I usually give them away to people who do not quilt and think they are marvelous. Mostly new mothers!

This is what I was taught also for hand and machine quilting....but again it's your quilt and the only place it would make any difference at all was if you were entering it in a quilt show.

quiltmaker 04-22-2011 04:31 AM

sorry double post

sueisallaboutquilts 04-22-2011 04:35 AM

Lynnie, I can't believe anyone would say that!!! You used the correct word- sourpuss!!!
Your work is always awesome!! :D:D

LindaR 04-22-2011 04:56 AM

when you cross the lines its called meandering not stippling, my rule, sounds like a new "rule" LOL

lscho4jm 04-22-2011 05:00 AM

Rules do not apply to your Artistic Muse. Same goes for chocolate and naps.

loo13 04-22-2011 05:02 AM

I'd like to know who appointed "them" quilt police. Next time ask them bet they won't have answer. I agree my quilt to heck with "them"

bigsister63 04-22-2011 05:04 AM

Remember there are no quilt police!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tweezy50 04-22-2011 05:04 AM

Should have told her, "Yeah, and I step on cracks in the sidewalk, too, and you know what? Never once broke my mother's back!"

Here also --if they only knew how they can hurt someones feelings with there comments, and maybe make them so they don't ever want to quilt /etc again.
I don't mind constructive critizism but there is way of being kind.

Weenween 04-22-2011 05:17 AM

Your House,Your Sewing,Your Rules.Your Quilt. If you like it and like doing it that is all that matters so tough on the QUILT POLICE!!!!!

sandpat 04-22-2011 05:20 AM

I asked that question to one of the Paducah "big name judges" once when I was taking a class from her. She told me as she broke into a huge hearty laugh..."We don't get that picky!! There is NO way that we have the time to examine every inch of every quilt to make sure no line of quilting touches or crosses another. We can't understand why people keep these ideas going!!"...SO.....that was from one of the "official" quilt police. I'm going with what she said. LOL

Your Cat quilt is fantastic, made for a great cause and you shouldn't worry one second about what some old biddie said about it.

Homemother 04-22-2011 05:21 AM

Cross you eyes
Cross your fingers
Cross your legs
Cross your heart
Cross your lines
Cross her off your "listen to" list!

8-)

MillieMoseley 04-22-2011 05:32 AM

I think it should just be left up to the quilter. NO rules apply. I am one that does not like to cross over stitches but you know one day I might do one crossing over just to see if I might like it that way as well.

kwhite 04-22-2011 05:36 AM

Ok you guys. Stop bashing that poor poor woman who is probably miserable being stuck in that box of rules. Just think of how liberating it would be if she were able to break free from those confines and be free to do whatever she wants, like we do. We should all pray to the quilt God's for her salvation, not add to her misery. Remember, "But for the Grace of God......"

Amen!

I appreciate this thread because I'm working up the courage to do some FMQ'ing. This thread has given me the permission to do it 'my way'; permission I may never have given myself. :)

np3 04-22-2011 06:10 AM

I try not to cross lines because I like the challenge of making the puzzle. However, I have crossed the lines when I "goof" but I just say "shoot" and keep going. For me, it's like I missed the basket in Basketball. The game isn't over and I still love my quilt. Just smile and ignore her.

Jennifer22206 04-22-2011 06:15 AM

your quilt - your choice. Who cares? If you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

margecam52 04-22-2011 06:43 AM

I've seen/read that "rule"...but, aren't rules made to be broken?
I bet your quilt is just beautiful...and that person is one of those who just "must" have the last word in.
I try not to cross a line, even meandering...but 99% of the time, I end up crossing just a few (ok, many).
It's the same thing with the "You must use 100% cotton to make a quilt, and thread has to be cotton also."
Well, when on a budget & when doing memorial/T-shirt quilts, that rule is gone also.
Now that we have the specialty threads...anything goes. I use all kinds of threads...even serger thread on cones...it's very strong.
No, poly thread will not cut the cotton fabrics...and also, as long as you use the same type of fabric in a pieced quilt (say an Irish chain), you should be just fine with a blend. I use a 60/40 blend a lot...I love the way it quilts up. I don't mix it with 100% cotton....oops! Another of my own rules broken...I do as long as I have prewashed & machine dried the cotton..darn...means No rules for me!

is there really a "NO CROSS" rule to siplleling

Rose Bagwell 04-22-2011 06:43 AM

You will always find someone who has to be negative, why can't people just say nice things or say nothing at all. I never critic anybodies work, even if I notice a mistake or two. I do quilting as I do my golf for relaxing , I am not a professional golfer or quilter.

Quiltbeagle 04-22-2011 06:44 AM

Your quilt, your rules. To me a snuggly, warm quilt made with love IS perfection!

ButtermilkMama 04-22-2011 06:50 AM

I dislike people who think they "know it all". DO IT

YOUR WAY!!!!

whatever 04-22-2011 07:06 AM

she was jealous at such a great job so she had to say something mean... just the child in us- I practice when someone says something negative about what I made, make up, clothes, hair, etc. there jealous

Parrothead 04-22-2011 07:08 AM

I have never heard of this rule. I am the type of person that wants to know "why" and "since when". I have several vintage quilt books/articles. There are no rules in them. Think of our foremothers quilting way out in their farm houses. How did they learn of the rules? No TV, no computer, not a lot of books (some could not read). Do you think the women quilting in the covered wagons as they traveled West, followed any rules?

What? Well I am glad that no one told me that I couldn't think out of the box! Life would be very boring!! I agree if you were entering it in a contest it might make a difference but other than that just create away !!!!!

nativetexan 04-22-2011 07:12 AM

hey, you can do loops in FMQ and they go over each other! so there, whom ever!

I like what Alabamaon the river wrote "I follow my rule which is, it's my quilt I will make it how I want." I feel the same way she does. If you like it who cares. If it looked nice to you then don't worry about it. I bet it turned out beautiful, and who ever gets it will love it too.

Perhaps that is THAT person's rule! I tend to ignore those who make those types of comments, as they are just jealous of your work!

I have / A son who said "MOM" I'll take any quilt thats not perfect of yours. :D That boy will end up with a lot of quilts.

coolcat 04-22-2011 08:33 AM

Quilting should be enjoyed. There are too many stresses in life and quilting should be your "out"....to get away from all that. My sewing room is my little safe haven.
Free motion is exactly that.....free to do what ever you want.
If you were entering your quilt in a competetion than one should be fully aware of the rules that the judges will be basing their decision on.
I agree with everyone.....just enjoy!

tangledthread 04-22-2011 08:35 AM

Someone here once posted the saying "Don't let her comments live rent free in your head" I love that saying and now live by it!

grumpy90650 04-22-2011 08:57 AM

WOW, it is hard for me to believe that someone would actually point out a crossed line......the nerve!!!!! next time just say it is your artistic, creative, breaking all the rules mind at work!!! LOL

BJ SewKkrazzy 04-22-2011 10:05 AM

I am a crazy quilter....because there are no hard and fast rules!!!
Free-spirit crazy quilter

LAB55 04-22-2011 10:20 AM

I agree - your quilt, your way. I hand quilt & I have crossed lines before, no biggy - suppose to be that way ! :-D

IBQUILTIN 04-22-2011 10:54 AM

My Quilt, My Rules. There are some people out there that are soooooooooooo unccomfortable in their own skin, that they have to be critical of others. Ignore them and move forward,

tweezy50 04-22-2011 11:54 AM

If that was the worst thing she could find about your quilt, I'd say, you must have done a great job?!

quilter42 04-22-2011 12:36 PM

thank you for asking that. I will feel so much better about trying to free motion now
