I have it on the inside of the door going to my sewing room. The door closes fine.

Thanks for posting that photo, Onebyone! I asked the wrong question! I was wondering how far you can open the door with the hanger on it. We have a narrow sort of hallway into my sewing room, on account of the closet being adjacent to the door.

I got an over the door "magazine rack" It is made of canvas and has about 6 pockets. I use it to store all my smaller rulers and my embroidery hoops. I also have a couple of smaller books I use often on quilt sizes and other stuff.

I can open the door until the rack touches the window next to it. No major obstacle in opening the door wide.
