Wholecloth Tablecloth

I'm considering doing a wholecloth tablecloth quilt for my dining room table.

Has anyone ever done this?

I have found a batik fabric that I really like and that goes well in my dining room that I would like to use and the quilting would all be free motion and maybe rulers.

What batting would you use for something like that? I want some definition, but I don't want the wine glasses to tip over, either.

Is this is silly idea?

Thanks, Watson

No, not a silly idea, you just need a low-loft batting. Soft & Crafty or Poly-Fil are both good options as long as you don't plan to put any lit candles on top of the tablecloth. I've used Poly-Fil to make placemats & it quilts up nicely and is relatively flat. It gives very little stitch definition, but the only way to get more is to go with a higher loft & you don't want that for a tablecloth. If you want your stitches to really show, try a contrasting thread and/or either a 28wt or 40wt thread. Also, make sure there is roughly the same amount of quilting across the quilt as poly batting will bunch in the wash if it has somewhere else to go.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! Some of my favorite quilts are wholecloth.

For table runners, I use Pellon white fleece that I get from Hamels Fabrics in Chilliwack, B.C. It is quite flat, but gives some definition. Not sure about the wine glasses though!

I have made tablecloths and used flannel as the batting. Not much definition there, but the wine glasses don't tip over!

I am looking forward to input from other quilters.

Glad to see you have your priorities right as to the wine glasses not tipping over..lol..maybe you could use flannel and if one layer isn't quite thick enough you could use two? I would love to see the finished tablecloth as it sounds lovely

Would love to see when finished.
