Why do I do this

Last week I had to as my DH to tighten the nut on my rotary cutter. I now need to change the blade. I think that nut is welded on there. DH is out for today. Thank goodness for my rotary cutter collection, but the other one is my fav.

It's one of the many parts of Murphy's law.

Jeanne S 10-27-2014 03:39 PM

Can you put a drop of WD40 on the nut then try to unscrew it with pliers?

Cass62 10-27-2014 03:47 PM

I have learned over the years never to use the word "tighten" when speaking to a man. :)

Eisy 10-27-2014 04:14 PM

That is so true, Cass62. Anything that my hubby tightens is tight to stay.

Sometimes it just is not worth letting the DH's into the sewing room. Other times. .,,...

It's lucky you have other cutters, I would have to go out and buy another one if that happened to me!

Tartan 10-27-2014 07:22 PM

That's when I would raid my husbands tool box for vice grips and handle that stubborn nut.

kitah 10-27-2014 08:06 PM

I had one of those pliers like to put snaps on , well I couldn't get it to do right and asked DH to see if he could get the snap on . Well, he bent it !!! He held it so tight it just twisted ! Never to be used again!! !LOL

true4uca 10-27-2014 08:10 PM

Yes, The vice grips worked, just don't like using the Friskers cutter. Have to remember to close it.

Try turning tighter then the undo way. I live alone and get very annoyed when people at classes tighten my cutter after borrowing saying " it was loose".

Kitsie 10-28-2014 07:54 AM

Interesting! After having trouble getting my blades to cut for very long I found that it I LOOSEN the nut I get much more wear out of it. I think having it tight was causing only one section to contact the fabric! Now it "rolls" along while cutting.

Hope he can un-tighten it!

So you have pliers in your tool kit? Use it but be careful not to pinch yourself. froggyintexas

nativetexan 10-28-2014 08:53 AM

shoot, i have to get pliers to open my husbands new eye drops!!

sewmary 10-28-2014 01:44 PM

Brought mine in to the guys at work. Two seconds with a plier. Makes them feel useful:)

jothesewer2 10-29-2014 03:09 AM

I took a quilting class and the instructor told us that the cutter nut should not be real tight. It needs to be loose enough for the blade to turn properly. It works better a little loose.

citruscountyquilter 10-29-2014 03:17 AM

When my husband tightens things they are so tight. I often have problems getting the cap off the gas tank after he gets gas in the car. I don't let him near my sewing things.

OrangeSherbet 10-29-2014 05:16 AM

WD40 is not a lubricant; it will just gum it up. Try a few drops of sewing machine oil.

I got a DH funny for ya! When DH and I got together, I bought one of the silly can openers where you just push a button and it travels around the can for you. Worked great for a while, then would not work anymore, so I bought a cheap mechanical one. It worked for a few days then it quit working also. I went through about seven can openers, and everyone worked perfect when new, but within a few days they would not work anymore. I was beginning to think they are all made of pot metal or something....then one day I was making spaghetti and DH offered to open the cans for me. I said sure. After he went back to sit in front of the TV, I tried to open the can of chopped olives he missed. The stupid can opener didn't work anymore! What the? So I called DH back in the kitchen to show him, and he tried it. It worked just fine for him. Arrrrg! That is when I decided to watch him open a can. Light bulb moment! Duh, he is left handed, and everytime he used a new can opener, he was holding it so tight, that he actually bent the can opener into a lefty model! I gave him his own lefty opener and now my can opener works great! Lol! Men, can't live without them, and it is illegal to shoot them! lol!

I have a little ceramic box on my cutting table that holds a pair of pliers, needle nose pliers, wire cutters, box cutter, little rubber mallet and a couple things I can't remember. They always come in handy. I also put together a metal tool box for the tool box on my truck for little emergencies, course that's back when I could drive a lot myself. but that little tool box has sure came in handy...LOL ..but I don't have any jumper cables in there. :D

Hate to tell you how many toilet tanks my husband cracked because he was sure it needed just "one more turn"!

QuiltingByFiona 11-02-2014 11:28 PM

Lol! I let my hubby unscrew jars for me. I think it makes him feel like a man. But I am not sure if I would let him tighten anything in my studio, I would never get it undone! Lol!

Mine is also really good about opened Nguyen really tight jar lids. He's come to expect it. That's his job.

According to their specs and website, WD40 is a cleaner and lubricant. I have used it to unstick numerous metal parts for many years with great results. But I am sure machine oil works too.
