Just wondering WHY the selection and quality at different JoAnn's stores varies so much ???

Our local store (booming SW Houston suburb) has nice staff, but it still in the same OLD strip center where it's been for years. It's a really small store and rarely has any NEW books, patterns or better fabrics. I've asked the mgr why they don't get newer items or more of them, and she said "she gets what they send her." Maybe she's not trying ...
Even the "new" fat 1/4's they re-stocked don't look any better than what they had before
I've been to several newer JoAnn superstores in Austin, SA & other areas and they are GREAT stores - tons of room & a large, current book, notion & fabric selection as good as any quilt shop around !!
WHY don't they update more of their stores??

(Hi there from an Ex-Houston-er!)

My local store is a small "cave" with small selection of items!
I have to travel about a 1/2 hour to get to one of the new "mega" stores!!!

When we travel to Wisconsin, the one close to where we stay, is so old, it has the old short "isles" that you can see over...!!

Think they are forcing everyone to shop on line!!!
I am old fashioned in that I want to TOUCH things before buying!!!

I knw that some department stores will have different levels of stores. Such as an "A" store, a "B" store and a "C" store. These are based on the neighborhood, expected sales, and "quality of clientele." Perhaps JoAnn's think people in your neighborhood are not into sewing so that have a "C" store there. Of course, I think they are loosing customers by having a poor quality store in your area.

We have the same thing here in California! The store closest to my house is always dirty. I will go to the toys r us next door, rather than use their bathroom. But the MEGA STORE in Redlands is clean, well stocked, friendly, knowledgeable staff! I go to mine when I want thread, or patterns.

We have two here in Columbus the one near me is not too small but has a good selection especially crafts. The larger one is in a well to do area and is twice as big as the close one. But the help in them is so different the larger store employess are standoffish and in my store they are very friendly and know their business.

Funny. We just had a discussion about that very subject at my little Bee this morning. I live about 1/2 mile south of the PA line in Maryland. The closest Joann's to me is in our county seat about 12 miles away. It is a c+ store, crowded, junky with no public restroom. I went in there today with three 50% of coupons. Everything was already on sale so nothing to use the coupons on. I tried to purchase a magazine as there was no sign saying there were on sale. At the checkout they told me I couldn't use the coupon since the magazines were 10% off. No sign saying so, I told her to keep it.
About 30 miles east and north of me is a fantastic A+ Joann's etc. store in York, PA. I was debating going there this week as all of the thread is on sale at 50% off. That store has a fantastic selection of thread from serger to embroidery and everything inbetween. Our local one only carries Coats and Clark and Gutermann. Another Joanns about 20 miles sounth of me falls somewhere inbetween the two. They do carry Sulky thread.

I would be happy to have even an older JoAnn's near me. I used to live just 12 minutes from a Super JoAnn's. Now, the nearest one is 128 miles from me, in Tulsa.

TexasGirl I know the store you are talking about. I don't think they have vacuumed since the store opened. It was pretty much the same when it was still Cloth World. I moved from that part of town to Katy, and the store in Katy is great.

I see it in Florida, too. The two near me - 1 older and small selection, but great staff - the other shiney and remodelled so it is a scrapbooking store that also carries some fabric. There is a superstore an hour away that is wonderful, but not worth the trip unless there are more things I need to do in that area.
