Why don't I do this

Why don't I take the time more often to match my thread color. Just did this and it is so worth that extra little effort. This may become my New Years resolution

Onebyone 12-15-2016 12:14 PM

Match it to what?

QuiltnNan 12-15-2016 12:18 PM

sounds like a great idea

true4uca 12-15-2016 12:47 PM

Oops, meant to say match thread to fabric.

Are you saying you match color thread to fabric when piecing? My thread is either white, beige or gray usually for all, exception black or navy blue....then usually matched......or close....

sewbizgirl 12-15-2016 12:59 PM

I use white for most all piecing and some quilting. Sometimes it's an art to choose just the right color for quilting.

Onebyone 12-15-2016 01:11 PM

Unless I'm sewing white to white fabric I usually use bright red thread to piece with. Red thread makes me happy.

GingerK 12-15-2016 02:04 PM

I usually use cream or grey. Lately, I have been using grey more often. I'll even use cream when piecing white. I always try to match my top stitching thread tho. That way, it won't show any small oopsies. But Onebyone, I like the idea of using a colour that makes you happy! Bet you don't have a hard time seeing it if you have to unsew!

I inherited many, many wooden spools of thread from Mom and Grandma. I use light colors to fill bobbins and store empty wooden spools in large clear containers on a shelf in my sewing cave. I leave dark colors on spools and store as well. Love seeing them, makes me forget about the dust I should deal with ! LOL!

lots2do 12-15-2016 04:43 PM

I have old thread from Mom and Mom-in-law, too. I used to keep the spools in one of those jar lamps. I'm thinking of decorating a mini Christmas tree with them and some other notions.

One by One...good for you!

true4uca 12-15-2016 05:14 PM

Usually those are my go to piecing colors. Then when I stitch in the ditch I often will just continue with these colors telling myself that's fine. Well I know that isn't the right thread to use.

White, beige or black or navy are the colors I use for piecing. The thread doesn't show because the seams are pressed in one direction. Good way to get rid of odd colors, too!

mic-pa 12-16-2016 03:44 AM

I use light lavender to pc with you would be surprised how it blends with a lot of colors. Never use white or black unless the fabric is that color. I also use a beige or cream thread to pc. works for me

sandy l 12-16-2016 04:33 AM

I use light grey, beige, or cream for all my piecing. And since I do mostly scrap quilts, multi-color for the quilting.

Karamarie 12-16-2016 05:17 AM

I like to use up spools of thread, no matter the color.

maviskw 12-16-2016 06:24 AM

I, too , use up spools of thread, putting the last few yards of a spool on the bobbin. Much better to run out of thread in the bobbin than from the spool, which can cause some nasty thread nests. One time I thought I was going to have to take the machine in to the repair man, it was so tight.

I have read that years ago, quilts were pieced with white or black or red thread. I can't imagine the reason for the red, unless it is like Onebyone said, it makes you happy.

i found a mini tree at a garage sale decorated with sewing things so had to have it, of course.

This made me smile, as I quilted a top that me husband's grandmother had made many years ago. The top was blue and white and she had used red thread to hand pieced it. The red thread is visible when looking at the finished quilt. I always explained to anyone looking at it, that the red thread was probably what she had on hand so she used it. Now I believe I want to use your explanation "Red thread made her happy" if you don't mind. LOL

Me too! My thread colors are limited to yours. don't have problems with the thread matching

Aurora 12-17-2016 02:52 AM

I always match my thread, it is a left over habit from sewing clothing.

quilterpurpledog 12-17-2016 03:20 AM

I like to keep my bobbins clear so I use up left over bobbin thread when I piece things. Then, I use cone thread that is a neutral. Right now I have lots of bobbins with some thread on them because of raw edge applique that I used to make some Christmas gifts; I will have a piecing good time after the holidays. I use matching thread of quilt on the front of my projects. I like to use Bottom Line thread when I stitch in the ditch. I also like 30 or 40 weight thread to quilt my designs.

Please make sure that you are testing the thread for breakability. Old thread only gets older and can make a quilt come apart after only a few years or any tugging that goes on when sleeping. Just saying...

wildyard 12-17-2016 04:38 PM

I use up all my partial bobbins when piecing then wind partial spools of thread onto the bobbins to use them up also. I tend to use cones of thread for top sewing so I don't have to thread the needle too often. LOL

romanojg 12-18-2016 02:35 PM

Not sure what you are sewing, I don't worry so much with piecing, normally its gray, tan, neutral or beige and it blends in well. When I'd doing clothes I try to match or do one shade darker than fabric for the thread. Serging, I only make sure the needle threads match and not worry so much about the loopers.
