What's the best place to get wide quilt backing? I need to get backing for LOTS of quilts. I need coordinating colors and white ones. Does someplace online sell blenders type fabrics in the wide width?

It's a little pricey but here's a site.

JoAnn's sells muslins that are 90-120" width and so doe the Hancock Fabric store if you have either one of those near you. I'm sure a local quilt store would have 90- 120 widths also.
Hope this helps.

Joanns has a new line of backing at $9.99 and I like it's great to get it at 50% off too. I posted it once so check my post to see samples.

Try thousands of bolts. They have a great selection - good prices too.

They are listed in the Quilt Backs sections with WIDE in the description.

JoAnn's also has some other wide backing fabrics...great when using your 40% or 50% coupon. I just bought some to make some curtains for my daughter's new kitchen. And JoAnn's has the Kona muslin in wide widths. I was there yesterday and my store was out of the bleached (which I wanted) but had the unbleached. The lady at the checkout said her mother is an expert quilter and recently completed her a beatifully quilted wholecloth quilt using the wide Kona muslin. She said she gets it after her mother enters it in the Ohio state fair.

There was a recent (this week) thread about using sheets for quilting. There were recommendations for what types to use for backing (avoid the high thread count as too hard to quilt). Also, Klue said she uses flannel sheets as backing for utility quilts.

Keepsake has 104 inches for 13.92 and 108 for 14.96. This is about 2 1/2 times wider than ordinary fabric and looks to be very reasonable.

Connecting Threads also has wide backing!

Over the Rainbow and Marshall Dry Goods have a variety. I have ordered from both, but not the backing (yet, but will be as soon as I finish my tops). Marshall Dry Goods has a variety of widths from 90"-118" I think.

(edited to correct size to 118" - sorry, not wearing my glasses) :)

Fabric Depot has prints and blenders and solids I believe. Right now there is a 25% off sale. The 25% is taken off when you place the item into the sales cart.

Their backing is 108- 118 inches wide as is $10.40 or less a yard on sale

I just found this site, there are many quilt backs here. I've never ordered from this one, the prices seem on the high side, but I bet it is really nice fabric. http://www.christianlanequilters.com/widebackings.html

fabric.com has a good selection of extra-wide fabrics. Whites, tone on tone, prints, flannel, muslin... I think their prices are reasonable:

sewbatik.com has a nice selection of extra-wide batiks.

http://www.christianlanequilters.com/widebackings.html sells only FatBacks (queen-size backings) and extra-wide yardage. Good selection.

I get mine at Hancock Fabric. It sure makes it easier to finish the quilt.

pittsburgpam 07-26-2009 10:18 PM

I found the colors I want at fabric.com and I like the white-on-white ones they have. It's only 6.98 per yard for 108" wide (says compared to $9.99 at other places). I have quilts that have bright white in them and I couldn't find anything else that wasn't a natural or off-white. I have to measure 1 of the quilts again. It's very large and I am not totally sure that 108" is big enough with 4" extra around each side.

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Nixiechicks had some on sale, not sure if it's still there or not.
Take a gander over and check them out.

i've used this and if cost is an issue, you can't do any better. just remember that it shrinks, so 108" becomes more like 104". but it is very soft and comes in a a couple of prints in several colors. like janw said, use your coupon. and start stocking them up.

pittsburgpam 07-28-2009 07:44 PM

Nixie Chicks has backing for $7.99. Nice blenders but I needed a dark blue and a white, which they didn't have.

I ordered some at fabric.com.

JANW 07-28-2009 07:57 PM

Just checked mine and no shrinkage, but I only wash in cold water too.

Whittles had some interesting looking backing, you might take a look at here

http://www.whittlesfabrics.com/cgi-b...duct=Widewidth

I just bought some of the Roclon, $6.50 a yard. I only ordered it night before last, so I haven't gotten it yet. I asked them to send me 3 -3 yard pieces, instead of 9 yards, so we'll see if they actually do it.

pittsburgpam 07-28-2009 08:20 PM

I was looking at that Roc-lon but I had never heard of it and wasn't sure what it was.

Let me know what it's like.

motomom 07-28-2009 08:28 PM

Will do. It may arrive tomorrow or the next day, they said it shipped out on 27th.

JANW 07-29-2009 06:25 AM

I've never heard of Whittle's fabric and just spent 1/2 hour drooling over their good buys. Thanks for the tip.

motomom 07-30-2009 03:36 PM

Got my backing yesterday. It is nice heavy muslin and they did cut it just as I asked. Nice service and great fabric. I got the unbleached, as that is what I prefer for quilt backings. Family tradition.

pittsburgpam 07-30-2009 03:51 PM

Thank you... I'll have to try it. I believe that I have backing for the next two quilts I plan to do (if all goes according to plan and I don't change my mind). I don't have backing for a red and white quilt but I would want to be totally sure that the ROC-lon bleached is WHITE because the white in the top is very white.

Maybe I can get a sample.
