I think that works, and will make a beautiful quilt. I like to see blocks used in less-traditional ways.

Of course it will work but you will need to work from a design wall and very controlled piecing of the various blocs and their placement.

I went back and looked at the 'Way Around' quilt shown on allpeoplequilt site that I saw recently. Looking at those blue colors, I think the way you are planning to do the gradation will work very well. Especially if using the soft creams and not white, and staying away from the teal side of blue on the color wheel. More like taking the blue paint color strips at the hardware store that go from dark blue to the lighter hues.

As long as there is enough difference in the background and light blue so the pattern will not get lost. So figure these colors first and move out from there. It will be beautiful. This will always be one of my favorite patterns.

I love the design and have something similar in the works but using the kaleidoscope block.

I just finished a quilt using Stonehenge which is one of my favorite fabrics. The only thing I would caution you on is that there can be a wide variation in color in the yardage. I was using a deep mossy green and in some places it's lighter and more mint green while in others it's darker and more olive. It was a pretty significant difference. It can also work to your advantage if you fussy cut for some of the variations in your design.
