Will this look good? How would you quilt this?

Attached is a swap block quilt I am finishing up. Need to rotate one block at the bottom and add the borders at the top and bottom. Then making another 2 1/2" border strip of alternating black/brights fabric that matches the blocks with black on each side of the strip. Add the last black border strip and then the binding.
I'm not a fancy quilter- yet - but I'm starting to take my quilting up a notch and do different things. Just finished the Angela Walters Craftsy class on quilting in negative space. So inspiring. These black sashings would be negative space yes? What would be a nice way to quilt this? What color thread? |
Your quilt is very pretty! Is that disappearing 4 patch blocks? I want to try that one!

Love your quilt, but I always have the same problem. Wondering how to quilt it. I am sure whatever you choose will be fine.

Are you FMQ on a domestic or log arm machine? Yes, the black is the negative space. Angela does a lot of ruler work on blocks but I don't know if you can do that. If you can, a diamond shape would be nice in each of the 4 patch patches.
If you are looking for a single FMQ design for each blocks, I might try the Square Flower design for http://www.theinboxjaunt.com/ She has in in a 6 inch square but you could downsize it to 4 inch for each of the 4 patches or upsize it to do the whole block. I also like to do an orange peel design using the sides of 4 patch squares and that would look good also I think. You can find all her designs by clicking on the quilt/tutorial button at the top under the title and then click on the quilting tutorial (motifs) section. |
I can only tell you how I would do it. I would stitch in the ditch in the blocks. You can try to do that by free motion but if you don't have the confidence yet, just use your walking foot. I would find a simple quilting template that would fit in the square and quilt that design in each of the full squares. You can find a stencil if you wanted to put something in the sashing but it is difficult to find something with the correct length that will match at the intersections. You could mark a simple crosshachting design to fit in the sashing or just leave it blank. It is all up to you and what you feel comfortable doing. Your selection of fabrics was excellent. Nicely balance layout.

Looks fantastic. Quilting no idea I always get stuck there.

No ideas here but wanted to leave a BEAUTIFUL comment! Love it..

I agree with ManiacQuilter2, I would stitch-in-the-ditch; I believe the black areas and border area would be negative space so you could do more detailed stitch there. I think it will turn out fabulous no matter how you quilt it. Great job!

Or what about a simple flower design inside the squares?
|
i would use a curved design in the sashings. pretty quilt
