I just ordered a 24X36 from JoAns and it doesn't smell. In fact I've never had one that smelled and I have at least 7 different sizes.

Yes mine smelled too. I contact Olfa and they said they have had such a demand that they were shipping as soon as they are made. (and not having usual airing out time) She assured me that the smell would go away and offered a solution- unfortunately I deleted it when the smell went away on its own.

I just used a fan and opened the window after putting it on a drying rack.

I got a new one back before Christmas for my Kitchen Stitchin'. I had posted a thread about it smelling; got lots of ideas. Guess what ?!?!?! None of them worked. I had it up in my bedroom last weekend and realized it still smells just as bad as when I bought it. My Great Dane walked up to the table it was on, sniffed of it, and sneezed like crazy. I feel a headache come on every time I use it. No more self-healing mats for me, as they all smell. I did the sniff test at Joanns a couple weeks ago, and they all smell the same.

that is so funny you would say that your "mat" smells. I was at a Joann's and a lady returned hers, "It smells" and the cashier said okay, the lady asked if they had any that did not smell. The cashier told her they all do and that you need to let them "AIR" out. The lady just looked at her like she was crazy. I chuckled and proceeded to ck out.

I buy Salem mats - no problem.

This is what is on the OLFA web site in the frequently asked questions portion:
How do I reduce the strong plastic smell from my new rotary mat?
Due to production and distribution, a new OLFA rotary mat can emit an odorous smell that some people are sensitive too. To overcome this smell, we suggest that the mat be wiped down with a solution of equal parts lukewarm water and white vinegar, then let it set for five minutes. Afterwards, rinse off the mat and towel dry. Repeat as needed.

When I went to buy a new mat a Joanns I opened the plastic on one and it smelled bad I told the clerk about it and she was shocked I bought a different brand now I will do a smell test before I buy one!

Never did have a problem with mats smelling

Stuff that gasses off so bad like you described I would bring back. That can't be healthy to breath. I have Friskar mats and have not had a problem. Mine, I bought several years ago.

Same here. I got mine at JoAnn's and no smell.
