Will a permanent sharpie work for writing on labels?

I have been looking at Walmart for a marker that will work on fabric, but I haven't found one. Will a permanent Sharpie work for writing on labels?

Thanks for any information.

I tried to use one today on muslin, and it was a touch bleedy on some of the letters. Maybe I hesitated too much while writing out the info? I think I've heard of people using them.

The fine print on my sharpie markers says "not for use on fabric" I find that they are runny, hard to contain, and they bleed a lot. Not worth it. There are special fabric markers on the market.

I may be wrong and I hope that someone on the Board will say so if I am but I believe that the problem with Sharpies is that they are not acid free. Aside from bleeding, this could be a problem after several washings and use.

get some Micron Pigma pens. .05 size signs best. then dry and heat set just to be sure. I've done many signature quilts with those pens.

That is what I use for all my labels.

I use the black Sharpie fine point quite often without any trouble on fabric. I have used it to draw eyes on the worm quilts for kids.

Melanie, does the fine point Sharpie bleed when you wash the quilts?

I used Micron sigma pens myself. You can get them at JoAnn Fabrics or any quilt shop.

It bled when I wrote with it. I used a Pigma pen instead.

Okay, thanks. I appreciate the information. I have some internet shopping to do, I think.

Later....okay, it looks like my Walmart does have permanent fabric markers. I was just looking in the wrong aisle. Now to see if the internet really knows what it is talking about. Will check that out tomorrow.
