Will the quilt police come knocking at my door?

Or more importantly...any reason why I should not do it this way?
I'm making a large quilt with a shoofly border.
Each shoofly will be one color (assorted) with white in the middle and corners.
Usually the shoofly block is made of nine patch with HST's in the corner.
What if I just cut one long strip and add white squares in the corner
and sew diagonal lines? That's for the top and bottom.
The middle will be as usual color square/white/color square.
Would that be ok? Or would it look better the traditional way?
Hope this is clear.

By the way, I'm talking about this shoofly block:)

Can't hurt to try it that way- and remember the only rule we have is there are no rules :) Keep us posted on how it works.

Your quilt, your rules. Have you considered just making it a 9-patch with the corners and center white and the other 4 the color? As a border it would be like a dot-dash pattern in alternating colors in the three rows. With mitered corners it would work just fine. Whatever you decide will be fine...and there are no quilt police, really there aren't. :)

So your talking about a cutting a rectangle that's 3 units long by 1 unit wide (including seam allowances) and sticking a triangle on each end? That would work.

BTW, I hadn't seen this shoo fly variation before, so thanks for the block.

Oh wait, do you mean sew the white squares in the corners of the rectangle with a diagonal line and then flip the down pointing point up to make a triangle? That would work, yes, but trim off the two layers (color and white) that are under the top white triangle (trim to a ¼" seam). Make sense? The only difference would be no vertical seams in the top and bottom pieces. Sounds pretty smart to me!

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I think I will give this a go and see how I like it.

Thanks everyone!

Anyone running into quilt police should look them straight in the eye and say, "On my quilt I'm the Police Commissioner and it will be done the way I want it." Then just smile and walk away.

Good answer, raptureready!

There is no such thing as the Quilt Police... only rude opinionated people.

EasyPeezy 12-31-2011 08:16 PM

Thanks for your encouragement. I made the block and I'm very happy with it.
I will definitely use this method for my border. I made a small tutorial but
can't upload it. Can't even upload a photo tonight. Will try again later or
tomorrow. Happy New Year!!!

Can't wait to see the pic! Thanks for sharing.

I agree, there are no rules, or we make them up as we go along!! Go for it!!! :^)

Debbie C 12-31-2011 09:47 PM

the only rule is 'there are no rules'. Do what you want the way you want. Then post a photo and show us!!

Tartan 12-31-2011 09:57 PM

I'm not going to tell the quilt police where you live, so go for it! I was thinking looking at it that it's a snowball block with a square in the middle, hmmmm. Might be an idea there?

EasyPeezy 12-31-2011 10:50 PM

It's done. Here's my block and tutorial. Sorry couldn't load it here.

cheaha39 01-01-2012 05:53 AM

Your quilt! You get to decide! Go for it!

luci4 01-01-2012 06:35 AM

Do it your way. The quilt police might even like.it.

sewnbug 01-01-2012 06:49 AM

It's your quilt. you can do what you want.

EagarBeez 01-01-2012 07:56 AM

It's your quilt. I am sure it will turn out beautiful. Give the quilt police a box of donuts and send them on their way.

Halo 01-01-2012 10:01 AM

It's your quilt, you do it your way. If the quilt police show up at your door, lock it & pretend you are not home. There is no right or wrong way to make any quilt. It is how you want to do it is all that counts. I can never fallow a pattern exact. Always have to change something on it or how it is done.

How very well put. That's exactly what they are.

You know, sometimes what a lot of people call the "quilt police" are, quite simply, experienced quilters who are merely trying to share information that they have learned over many years of practicing a craft that you may just be starting to get the hang of.

Not all that long ago, craftsmanship was traditionally passed down from artisan to apprentice. It remains one of the very best ways to learn, from the experience of others, and it never hurts to give someone the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming them to be a meddling busy-body. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-forum/2c.gif
