You have to jump on that one.....You can never have enough fabric.... and you might get first dibs on anything new that comes in. What a great offer..... take it!!!!

Two years ago I retired. A month later I went to work at our LQS, just for fun.We have over 7000 bolts of fabric. I love it. Quilters are such wonderful people. I only work now when she needs the extra help, but I teach a small projects class once a month, and I do the Moda Club meetings once a momth. I love anything that has to do with Quilting!!

After I retired, I continue on as a substitute in the summers. I call that my fabric money. I never feel guilty going into a quilt shop that way.

The IRS is now specifically targeting LQS's for hiring and paying workers in this fashion, and the penalties for non-reporting of barter income are severe. If your LQS is caught not reporting income to you, you will also be audited for non-reporting of income.

Oh goodness! So much to consider. I will ask all these questions but what a hassle. What if I am considered an contract employee? I'd better call our CPA - there goes my first two months "income". Maybe I can make him a rag quilt in exchange.

The red tape of it all...such a buz kill! BUT Go for it and enjoy it while you can. But to be safe do have it checked out... ;)

Suzi 01-10-2011 04:56 AM

There are ways around all the red tape - such as your NOT working, your simply helping out a friend. Since when does the government need to stick it's nose into friendly bartering? They steal enough money from us as it is and then turn around and blow it right out the window - paying to study the mating habits of the common brown dog tick for one.

That is a dream part time job! I'd be all over that!

I agree and was thinking the same thing!! Well not so much about the mating habits especially about the brown dog tick...heee heee! But the helping out a friend thing. You wouldn't think that has anything to do with the government. Like you say, they take enough from us...It's like we're little kids with candy and the parent "government" comes long holding their hands out saying "Alright now, give me that!!"...Yep...a sure buz kill!!

juliea9967 01-10-2011 05:25 AM

That is what happened to me after I retired. I have never regretted it. The owner pays me, but I have been there for over 7 years now and have never received a paycheck. When I see all those beautiful fabrics come in, I just can't resist.

I worked in a yarn shop for yarn one day a week, a good idea and soon customers came while I was there for help and instructions. Later on I bought the business, sold it 22 years ago and not a week don't go by that someone doesn't call or come over for knitting or crocheting assistance.

natalieg 01-10-2011 06:14 AM

Sounds like fun to me! I never thought of all the red tape with something like that. I use the barter system all the time where I live (farm country) but haven't encountered anything like that before.

Great news! Don't you just love touching all the fabric! What a nice feeling!

catrancher 01-10-2011 07:31 AM

What a great opportunity! I'd do it. My only question is whether you'll end up with too much fabric. At some point, you might want something different. Any provision for that?

Heartwarming quilts 01-10-2011 07:32 AM

Sounds like fun

We are probably only be in the country for a few more months so I'm not too worried about "getting too much". If I were I'd already be worried - my stash is bigger than it should be I fear.

sewmorethings 01-10-2011 07:51 AM

Lucky you, wish i could land a job like that

janiesews 01-10-2011 08:13 AM

Have fun-my sister works occasionally in a quilt shop and says her Indian name is Works for Fabric.

Deborah12687 01-10-2011 08:55 AM

How lucky you are to get a job with a fabric quilt store.

zjsquiltymomma 01-10-2011 09:08 AM

What a wonderful job opportunity! I would love to have a job like that. :)

wordpaintervs 01-10-2011 09:11 AM

I'm not a great enough seamstress to land something like that and at age seventy with health issues, it would not be likely to happen. Now something I would and could do would be barter custom inspirational writings for quilt blocks or something. Type in my full name into your search bar ont he internet, and get an idea how I write. Maybe we could do a barter thing and I'd finally get a quilt together. ggl

wow that is great , are you there yet !!!!!!

kittycats 01-10-2011 11:43 AM

We have lost one day a week since the ecomomy has gone down. Would love for somebody to ask me to work that extra day off for fabric.

yonnikka 01-10-2011 11:51 AM

Remember, there is Batting, thread, and tools to consider, and you might want to do some trading with a quilting friend, to get the best value trade for your precious time. Also, who knows, it might turn into a paid position... fingers crossed.

wordpaintervs 01-10-2011 11:57 AM

I'll be excited to watch what happens. You are so very lucky to get this opportunity. Go for it!!!

quiltingnonie 01-10-2011 01:10 PM

DREAM JOB!

jeanneb52 01-10-2011 01:17 PM

Oh hell, I work for fabric NOW. And I don't work in quilt shop.

luckylindy333 01-10-2011 01:28 PM

My first "real" job was working in a fabric department of a department store. I spent a good portion of my salary on fabric. The department manager was a friend of mine, she and all the rest of us would make up "remnants" of the fabrics that we liked and stow them away for payday, when we got them for 1/2 off. Unfortunately, they were mostly polyester double knits :(

marjobee 01-10-2011 01:41 PM

Silly man.

IBQUILTIN 01-10-2011 02:12 PM

Great idea. Win Win on both sides. Go for it

I worked at a Joann's several years back and I think that I bought more fabric than I earned in my paycheck...lol

p38flygirl 01-10-2011 04:00 PM
