You can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket. Likewise you can't find these windfalls if you don't keep looking.

It's not just you. I never find anything either but I also don't spend a lot of time looking. I think you need to invest time to get the big payoff and I don't. Maybe someday.

I think I probably hit the jackpot this past weekend. There were two antique sewing machines advertised on Kijiji with a very poor fuzzy picture of one of them facing backwards. The ad said they were 1917 and 1941 models which I was sure was wrong and she was asking $60 for both. When I got there she said she would take $50 and they were both featherweights! One was a 1948 model and the other a 1952. The owner said they had belonged to her mother and her aunt who had both recently died and as she didn't sew she didn't want them at her house. I felt almost guilty as I loaded them (I did give her the $60 she had asked) and she was thrilled. They both sew well and have all the attachments, instruction books and even the original oil cans and grease tubes. What a deal!!! Keep looking especially at ads from people cleaning out estates.

I haven't run into any of those good deals yet, but keep looking.

Now I'm jealous! See...I don't find those kind of deals...at least not yet.

I find them most often because they are in the stores where I shop. It only takes a minute to check the racks at the thrift store if you are there on a regular basis. That is the other thing, you need to be a regular. That way your eyes can just skip along the stuff you don't need and wills top on things that are new. Also, get a friend who shops these places a lot and give them a list of things you are looking for. You can offer to repair some of the things she gets for her family in return - or make cookies or dinner for her family after a long shopping day. I used to baby sit her kids so she could go in peace. That is when she found the most stuff.

I never find deals, but I hardly leave the house, because it causes pain to walk. God Bless. Penny

WOW did well today I went into our 2 local op shops and 1 had lots of bundles of material from 50cents - $3.00 so I bought 4 bundles, the other had a table for $1.00 per roll regardless how big or small so I bought a heap of them to. both shops cost me 28 between them. then I spent $40.00 on plastic containers to put them in, I have colour coded them to a degree, now I just need to finish what I am making so I can start on the next project.
but it looks like the washing machine and iron are in for a work out

Gotta tell ya! After I posted about this yesterday, I went to an estate sale and got 5 yards, 10 yards and 15 yards, all still on the bolts for $3!!! Am in the process of washing it now.

litacats 07-15-2010 05:54 AM

well done I love it when something good happens to someone.
I still haven't washed mine yet maybe on saturday

jprusky 07-15-2010 03:49 PM

No, I don't stumble upon windfalls either!

Luv Quilts and Cats 07-15-2010 03:53 PM

I thought I was the only unlucky one. But I'll tell you, I have been finding things at Goodwill, consignment shops, even a local quilt show. So it can happen!

No ... I don't have any luck either ... :/

I never seems to be lucky enough to find them. But then hubby is usually with me and that pretty well tells the story. ha

I just hit one of those Bonanza's last weekend at a yard sale. For $20.00, I got tons and tons of nice quilting fabric, some finished practice blocks in different tecneques, and an unfinished antique quilt. It is embroidered, and pieced with old flour sacks. We figure its probably early 1920's or maybe just a little older. Jackpot!!!!

needlenut 07-17-2010 05:19 AM

I was lucky to find a hand pieced quilt top with batting and backing and several rows of hand quilting at the local thrift shop and got it for $1. It is repinned ready for finishing the quilting but haven't been able to get at it.
It will still be there when I have time "one of these days."
