I bought a fabulous desk to use for a cutting table when we move to the new house. It isn't tall enough so we decided to go the pvc pipe route to raise it up since that method seemed highly recommended here... Sadly the table is really wobbly.

Has anyone had this problem with their table - if so, how did you fix it?

We're probably just going to scrap the desk I got & use it for something else or sell it... and then invest in something else but I'm not sure what at this point..

How do you do the pvc pipe extension? I've never heard of that before.

Can you add a "support beam" from one leg to another so that it is stabilized?

rosemarie34 09-25-2011 01:50 PM

Have you thought of using bed risers ??

cut pvc pipe and place the legs into the open ends. Raises the height-since I am tall I made mine longer than at the LQS. I also added wheels.

Are you using a desk? It might be too heavy for the pvc.. I use a 4ft table from walmart and have no problems after I raised it with pvc.

I use bed risers. They are more expensive than PVC pipe but a lot more
stable. They come in 2 different heights. I can adjust the height depending
on what I'm doing.

The bed risers did not raise it up enough... It was a few inches too short with the bed raisers.

The table is very heavy. Maybe that's all it is - just the weight of the table itself.
We're thinking of doing this now http://ana-white.com/2010/02/plans-b...-top-with.html

Sometimes you just got to regroup and adapt :D

If you're tall you need to double the bed risers. Mine are stackable.
I believe they come in 5" and 3" so I can make them up to 8" higher.
Whatever you decide, it has to be for YOUR height. Compare it to
your kitchen countertop...try to cut fabric and see if it's comfortable
and go from there.

I used pvc pipes with endcaps on a folding cutting table and it does not wobble. maybe the desk is too heavy.

I built mine using two 4' book cases from Wm as the ends, and plywood on the top, then cleats in the middle and more plywood for a shelf between the two book cases!
quick, easy and very practical!

The bookcases are 4' wide or tall? I've been looking over WM's site looking for options...
The plywood.. did you put anything on the top to make the plywood smoother? I was thinking of spending the extra money and using Melamine for the top so that it was nice and smooth. I'm going to go in to town probably tomorrow and check out my options for wood...

The plans for the bookcase table are terrific. Makes a very usable space. I think you can get a drawer unit from the cabinet area in Lowes or another big hardware store. Great idea. I use a 6' folding table and don't raise it because I cut sitting down. Good luck on finding a good fit.

yes, sorry, the book cases are 4' tall. The top of the plywood is one large ironing surface! HOWEVER, don't bother doing that, once you but things on it, you NEVER iron on it!
I am thinking of removing the ironing cloth and putting Formica on it instead, I have an ironing "BOARD" that is 18" x 36" to put on when/if I need it! Same with cutting boards!

I bought bed risers for my table. It puts the table at the right height for me.

I found 2 of the 9 square cubby shelves at Walmart for $30 each. I can't buy and have the wood cut for that so I'm going to get those - and then get the wood cut for the top and whatnot. I figure we'll make the drawer since the plans call for it that way and I'll have enough wood left over after cutting the top piece to do it.

One person that posted a picture of theirs said that instead of nailing/screwing the top in place they made it more like a lid. I think we'll do that as well this way it is easy enough to move when we move to the new house.
Yeah, it's going to cost 3x as much as the original plan but I am totally loving the new plan. No worries about bedrisers or pvc pipe anymore. I am so good to go :D

I'll post pictures when I get it all built... but don't hold your breath. I will have to have my father in law help me as my husband is not really that handy... at all...

I don't know how high you want it but would ordinary concrete blocks under each leg work? If they are the right height you wouldn't have to worry about them be wobbly.
