Wonder Clips - is there a difference between Clover and other brands?
We have a house guest from Germany who likes to sew. She saw the clips in a catalog and we will probably want to order some from Amazon for her to take back with her. However, when I went to Amazon I saw tons of different sellers of wonder clips. The Clover brand is very expensive compared to many of the others. Has anyone purchased both and compared them? I am wondering if Clover is simply re-packaging the same clips made in China, or whether there is really a difference worthy of the more expensive price.

I have both the Clover brand and an off-brand that my cousin sent as a gift. I'm glad she did. Can't find a difference, and will buy the off-brand from now on. Some people complain that the off-brands are harder to use, but I've not had a spit of problem with them!

I don't know if this will help or not, but I just noticed last night that my Clover Wonder Clips have Japan stamped on the end of the clear side of the clips. I've had them for a couple of years and apparently the light hit them just right while I was hand sewing a binding. They also have to lines etched in the clear side that are useful for measuring. I have the little ones and use mainly for binding my quilts.

I have the mini wonder clips (red) and love them. I use them all the time for hand stitching the binding on. Really, I use only about 10 at a time and find I don't need more. I think they are sold in 10/pack so it wouldn't be that expensive to purchase.

Clover is a Japanese brand, so they are stamped "Japan". I have the Clovers and also got some Evergreens (also on Amazon). The Evergreen brand works well for me. They were mid priced. The least expensive brands seem to be the ones with the poor reviews.

I bought min on amazon 50 for 5.$ Canadian $ and they are just as good as the clover that are very expensive.....
|
I bought 3 packs of the off brand of the Clover clips. I have used the off brand quite often and can't tell any difference in them at all. The packs I bought from Amazon had 50 small one and 20 large ones for $9.99. My youngest DD uses them for her crochet projects and my oldest DD used them in making jewelry.
|
I got the less expensive ones but I also have some small clamps I got at the home improvement stores fairly inexpensive. They're about the same size. They look almost like a mini metal clothespin.
|
I have the clover and cheaper clips and when mixed together can't tell the difference. Love using them when sewing on binding.
|
Same here. Can't tell the difference. Just be aware that the inexpensive brands may take up to 6 weeks to ship.

I can tell the difference in the springs. There are counterfeit Clover brands so be sure you get what you pay for: https://cloverusa.wordpress.com/2015...-wonder-clips/

I was wondering the same thing. I bought Clover clips and I liked them so much, I bought the box of 50 when notions were on sale at JAF. My Clover clips are stamped Japan and I think the quality is much better than items made in China.
|
I got a package of counterfeit wonder clips from amazon that were marketed as clover wonder clips (third party seller, fullfilled by amazon). The quality difference was very evident. They didn't have the same spring. It was too tight. A couple broke right away. They had sharp spots where the plastic wasn't cut correctly. This would catch on the fabric. The color was off. I returned them. I am leary to buy the off brands because of this experience.

I had no idea there were counterfeit Clover clips, after closer inspection mine are counterfit!!!! One spring recently broke, that explains it!!!
|
I got the clover clips pkg of 50 from Nancy's notions, then got some larger ones at Paducah quilt show, they have klipit on top of color, so far no problems with either, so love them for binding!

I actually use a totally different product which I think does just a good job. And it's very inexpensive. I found that I can buy clips that you use to hold back your hair. They are the type that you press on the center and it opens or closes. I buy them at a dollar store for 20 for one buck! I've used them to hold my binding on the quilt before I sew it. I've used them to hold sets of blocks together. They are great!

I have the Clover brand for the small ones and another off-brand and I cannot tell the difference, and there's quite a savings elsewhere.
|
I haven't noticed any difference in the quality either. I use them all the time & I have Clover & another brand I bought off from Ebay really cheap. Both are great!
|
I bought my clips from a manufacturer named Evergreen on Amazon. I can't tell the difference, except for the colors, between them and my Clover brand. Much less expensive!
|
I have both and although if I look very closely I can see minor differences, I do not find any functional difference.
I have lots, so it will be quite awhile before I buy more. When I do need more I will buy the less expensive option. |
I have both and the main difference I've found is, as others have said, the spring. Some are fine, whilst others are stiff and definitely look to be made from a poorer quality metal.
However, for the money they cost (less than $4 for 50, including postage, direct from China) there's not much to complain about! |
I use the hair clips too
|
Great idea!!!

That's kind of like asking whether Northern tissue is the best or if "the other brands" are just as good. It depends whether you are comparing it to Charmin or whether you are comparing it to the 1-ply store brand.
The difficulty with most of the non-Clover Wonder Clips is that they don't have a brand attached, so you get what you get. Sometimes you'll get lucky & they're every bit as good (or close to it). More often, it seems the non-Clover ones have some sort of issue whether it's the spring, the type of metal rusting, burrs in the plastic or whatnot. Here's a link to a website where the blogger asked followers to share their experiences: http://so-sew-easy.com/budget-or-quality-wonder-clips/ |
I've bought the non-Clover brands - close enough for me, especially for the price. If there is a difference, I am not picky enough to notice. None of the "cheap" ones have fallen apart, and I now have enough to last about forever.
|
I use the hair clips - i have plenty in the bathroom vanity drawer that I just pull out when i need them. :D
Although - how easy to open/close are the true wonderclips? They would make great manipulatives for kids w/ fine motor skills. I use the wooden clothespins and the spring on those really stink. |
For those who use the "off brand" Wonder Clips, do they have the measurement marks on the flat side like the Clover ones do?
|
I had the little red Clover clips for a while and decided to try the "fake" ones. I can't tell a difference at all. For the price I'd go with the cheap ones and *if* one or two broke or whatever, you're still better off.
