embroider on muslin and make a quilt? Would it look tacky?

Machel 02-24-2009 04:58 AM

why wouldn't it as long as you use stablizer on the back. I think it would make a great antique quilt.

If you have a good quality muslin, it would be beautiful.

reneebobby 02-24-2009 05:02 AM

Oh good, then I'll start tonight on it. hehehehe

Also should I use a cutaway stablizer and not a wash away?

Machel 02-24-2009 05:04 AM

cut away depending on the quality of muslin. or use a coffee filters

reneebobby 02-24-2009 05:05 AM

Okay even better I have coffee filters. Thanks for your help

Machel 02-24-2009 05:07 AM

talking to Terri on phone she suggested coffee filters (white)

key4unc 02-24-2009 05:07 AM

Sound like it will be a beautiful quilt to me. Be sure to post pics along the way.

reneebobby 02-24-2009 05:15 AM

Machel will do. Tell Terri thank you also.

Key4unc I will post pics.

When I get home tonight I'll start on that and I just might have the hubby do the embroidery while I fix a quilt. I'll be killing two birds with one stone. lol

tlrnhi 02-24-2009 06:06 AM

Renee, I have used the white coffee filters on SMALL embroidery pieces. Not big ones. I should have mentioned that to Machel when we were talking. I wouldn't use it for an entire quilt, maybe for just a few pieces to get you thru in a pinch.
But, if I had my choice, I'd use tear away.

sewsewquilter 02-24-2009 06:08 AM

Be sure to post pictures. It sounds lovely.

reneebobby 02-24-2009 06:14 AM

Thanks Terri I have both.

Oh one more thing gee I'm thinking about stuff as we go along (should have thought through my question) SORRY, anyhow should I wash the muslin? I don't know if it shrinks more than cotton fabric.

Thanks everyone.

Shadow Dancer 02-24-2009 06:29 AM

Muslin shrinks LOTS!! So pre-washing is a good idea. I would also use starch when pressing it to give it some extra body...muslin gets soft after it's washed and dried. :)

Have fun! :)

reneebobby 02-24-2009 06:30 AM

Great thanks Shadow I thought I did see that on here somewhere. Okay so now I won't start tonight since I have to wash and dry hahahhaa.

It sounds like this quilt could be very nice. Kinda antique looking. Can't wait to see pictures.

sewjoyce 02-24-2009 03:32 PM

The quilt will be just adorable! Can't wait to see pictures

sewnsewer2 02-24-2009 05:52 PM

Just plain ole paper works great too!

My mom made me blocks on white muslin. It's a family thing, she embroidered all our family on it, with birthdates (she did it for all of us, so it's not just my faulty memory  ) She didn't use any stablizer but she did the embroidery by hand.

My suggestion would be to try using the used dryer sheets for stablizer, though. I'm loving using them for string quilts and I know that they are wonderful when I'm doing some hand embroidery on thinner fabrics.

So would you tear or cut away the dryer sheets or would you just leave it in? I don't have an embroidery machine, but sometimes have need for a stabelizer. Was wondering if you just left the sheets in or cut or tore them away. Oops repeated myself.

Muslin comes in many qualities. My rule is if I can see through it I don't put it in a quilt. I like the muslin labeled Premium or Super. The perma press muslin doesn't seam to shrink as much as the regular.

reneebobby 02-25-2009 05:22 AM

Thanks Bellaboo this has all been very informative.

Post a pic when your finished.

Hi renee bobby. if you haven't started your embroidered quilt yet (or even if you have I have a great tip that I got from a regular customer: I use a light weight iron on interfacing. DO NOT IRON11 hoop it with your fabric and embroider. then cut around your design and iron it after cutting the excess away. This leaves your fabric very soft. with no stiffness from your stbilizer. I really like this method. Looking forward to seeing your quilt.

Thanks froggy, not sure what I'm going to do yet, but will be starting soon.
