Wonky houses under construction. Help please!
 

I am doing this wall hanging using a fat quarter as the background. I have blanket stitched around the bottom of the houses and the interior doors and windows and tree trunk.

The roofs of the 3 houses, the top of the tree and the wavy road remain to be stitched.

My ?: Can I make the quilt sandwich and stitch around the roof tops, tree top and wavy road to make them poof out?
or.....is it better to stitch the entire applique scene before sandwiching and quilt the background later to make the appliques poof out? Thanks for your help!

They certainly are adorable. Love the rick rack. I always got enough pouf with Hobbs 80/20. You can try doing some trapunto stitching:

I am not an expert, but I have done a fair amount of this type of thing and I would absolutely say, yes. I also like the pouffing effect that you get with that.

I don't have an answer for you. Just wanted to say that I really like it. This is adorable. Can you tell me where the red Rick Rack is? Is it the cross? BrendaK

I don't have an answer, but your quilt is adorable! I just had to say. I made a pillow once where I put a piece of batting under the design I wanted to pouf up, then sewed around it. Then I put the regular batting under all and quilted. It was easy and looked great.

Yes, sandwich first then add the poof you are looking for by quilting. It is beautiful!

I have made wallhangings by fusing the design onto the background, then sandwiching and then what I call appliquilting the whole thing with the buttonhole stitch. Do a small sample to see if you like the way it looks on the back of the wallhanging. I'll see if I can find any instructions on it on youtube.

I didn't use red rick rack. The cross is a batik pattern. I plan to blanket stitch around it.

Thank you for the video. I loved it and can see how the applique poofs up when blanket stitching the applique in a quilt sandwich.
