wool ironing mat

I have been looking at the wool ironing mats and was wondering how long they last if used daily. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Discussed on this thread, along with alternatives that cost much less. No mention of lifespan, but I really can't see them wearing out. I don't use one. I have an old wool army blanket under my ironing board cover that works quite well.

My mom had one she used for garment construction. Lasted for years. I think it got tossed when they cleaned out the house. Wish I had hers... I got the alternate one from the carpet company. Can't see it wearing out... you walk on carpet every day!

Eleanor Burns has the large one at 30% off today and free shipping. In case anyone really wants one!

I have several. Two from quilt shops, some big scrap pieces from a carpet store, and I bought the large rug size from online from EcoRugPads. All of them shed some around the edges when used. If the iron is on highest setting the fibers will turn brown but hasn't been a problem so far. I made muslin slip cases for the smaller mats and cut the bigger one to fit my ironing board and use a fitted unlined board cover over it. I have the Steady Bettye too and I like it because the block/fabric pieces do not move when pressing. I am the type of person that wants to know what works and worth the money for me so I compare items for myself.

Thanks everyone for all your input and the old site. Think I will get one.

I have the mid sized one on a small folding table by my machine. Can't say I use it daily, but several times a week. Love mine.

I bought a 10 inch square one and really like it for seams but notice a musty odor when I use it. Have only had it about two months. Does that smell eventually go away?

I usually dampen mine before pressing and the creases are much sharper. Just a fine mist from my spray bottle of water.

I have one and love it!!! When I first got it I was excited and had just finished an intense redwork. Put the piece face down so I wouldn't flatten the threads. It did stink and I got some stains on my redwork from the wool. Made me kind of sick. But, I didn't give up. I made a pillow case type cover, now I've been using it for a couple of months - no stink and no more staining.
