OK - I've decided to do a D9P out of charms, I've played around for with fabric placement and am now ready to sew.
But first, a few questions.... Do I have to make sure each charm is "squared up" or do I just trust the fabric store I bought from??? Secondly, do I press each charm before sewing??? Lastly, (for now anyways) after I sew the 9 patches together, do I press the seams??? How? - to one side or open??? Or - should I wait to press the seams until I cut apart??? Thanks for answering my "silly" questions! (You know, it occured to me - when I first made quilts back in my 20's, I flew by the seat of my pants and just jumped in doing what I thought would be right. Now that I am older *much* I want to play by the rules & get it right :) ) |
You press the seams to the side. I never square them up...but you could...I would be pretty mad if I bought some and then had to square them...I do not press them unless wrinkled.

I love Charm packs.

I always press seams as I go!

I don't iron the charms right out of the package, I press each seam as it is sewn to the darker side. I do not press my seams open. I would think the 9 patch would be pretty square, but I would check each one before I cut the dissappearing part. When you have cut your original blocks apart, arrange them in a pleasing manner and sew them together, pressing each seam.

Thanks everyone for the fast responses!

I pressed mine just before cutting them apart, then again after they were restitched. I didn't press my charms or measure them. Mine are Moda and they are machine cut and very exact.

I have squared my charm packs because of how off they were it might be a good idea to at least measure them. I had one pack that was about 1/8-1/4 off

Have any of you had problems with the charm packs that are pinked on the edges? I used some and was frustrated that they weren't quite the 5 inches advertised.

Yes that is why I square them up.
