squaring my lap quilt on a shared table at a quilt class (not enough room) another corner folded under and i cut the edge of my last outside sash a deep 4 inch cut. Hince my quilt ended up quit a bit smaller than I wanted it to be. Big lesson learned.

I couldn't think of any mistakes till I started reading. Yep, done em all at one time or another. Like yesterday, turned the corner triangles on a Kansas Troubles the wrong way, not once, not twice, but three times. Fer gosh sakes, there's only three side to a triangle!

I was making a raggy quilt for my GD. I put on the binding and the next day took it to her. My DD looked at it and started laughing. I had forgotten to put the last border on one side of the quilt. I told her I wasn't going to fix it and that my GD will remember what a ditzy blonde her grandma was. She loves the quilt. I hope she remembers me whenever she looks at it in the future when I'm gone.

I've never told this before, but here goes. When I was in my twenties, having never sewn much of any kind, I bought a dresden plate kit.I thought , how hard can it be, everything is ready to sew. I SEWED THE CENTER IN AS ANOTHER PIECE instesd of applicaying it on.What a mess !

Worst thing I ever did was give up for 8 years.

I never make "mistakes" - just have "creative opportunities" ... and have had lots of them.....lol. Cut noticeable hole in Laurel Birch quilt I was making for fair.....so I did embroidered butterfly on top of it - worked great. On back of same quilt (which used hot ribbon applique on front) I had long, winding tuck.....I put hot ribbon over tuck and added leaves and a fish for label....looked like it was intentional. There is always a solution and sometimes we just need to walk away for a bit.

I teach quilting and also make samples for the store I work at. I finished a sample top and took it in to send it to the owner before they display it. I was teaching that day and all the students wanted to see the quilt. I unfolded it and held it up for the students to see and noticed that right in the middle of the quilt I had turned one of the blocks a 1/4 turn. I ended up spending my lunch taking it out and sewing it in the correct direction. I guess I showed my students that no matter how long you have been quilting you can still make mistakes.

The worst thing I did was layed my pattern on the cutting matt and got distracted and layed the fabric over the pattern. Well I cut the pattern up and had to buy a new one.

My worst mistake was on the first and only "trip around the world" quilt I've ever made. After it was sewn all together I was doing simple straight line quilting through the darkest blocks. Then through the next darkest blocks. No problem. But when I got to the 2 sets of light blocks, they didn't line up into a diamond, they were a rectangle???? Turns out I had set one entire quarter piece of the quilt in sideways--but because of the darker fabric it looked OK until you looked at the light fabric. Sigh. This was to be a gift for a friend and I decided there was no way I was going to rip it all apart. So I called it a "puzzle" quilt and gave it to my friend anyway. They loved it, and I love telling the story.

Biggest mistake I ever made in quilting? Hmm thats a not brainer. Thinking I can learn how to make quilts lol.
|
When I made my first quilt, I used a thin solid as one of my squares in each row and couldn't understand why some rows were longer or shorter than others. Naturally my first instinct was to trash the whole thing but eventually sat down and took apart each row and each square.

Crazy quilters don't make mistakes...we just cover them with embelishments...I once had an open spot in between two pieces of fabric when I got done sewing...emblished a piece of lace over and away I went....no one knows what we hide!!!!
|
Yeap done all of them, but I'm really honing my problem solving skills.

Once I was making a baby quilt and it was a rush job....the block was the friendship star...an easy block and it went together like clockwork. I got the whole quilt top done....2 borders and all and after pressing it, held it up for my husband to see. His question was: Are all the blocks supposed to be stars? I had mis-placed the half square triangles in 3 of the blocks and because I was rushing never noticed. Have you ever taken the seam ripper to interior blocks...and then tried to get the block sewn back into the quilt correctly. I remember in the middle of it....tossing the quilt top to the floor, stomping on it and stomping out of the room.

LOL Well ladies it is not our mistakes that define us, it is our solutions. Thankfully I sew in the basement and there are no windows. My close friends know to call first before just stopping by. HAHAHAHA

I think it's the Amish that say every quilt should have one piece that doesn't follow the pattern, so the quilt isn't "perfect", 'cuz only God is perfect! |
I'm admitting this only to make others feel better:
While making a full-size QAYG bedspread on a deadline for DGS, I patiently and diligently sewed the bottom to the end/foot of the top with a rather tight binding stitch (don't want grandma's quilts to fall apart). Only after finishing the entire seam did I realize that I had the batting on top instead of the middle! I quickly decided that the bedspread could just be 1.5" - 2" shorter and cut the seam off rather than rip out the stitching. Now, don't you all feel better? ;D |

The worst mistake I have made, that is undoable, is not taking a photo of an 1850s quilt I helped to restore. I appliqued on about 320 1 inch hexagons on a six-sided pineapple quilt, as well as a hundred or so 1/4 inch by 1 to 2 inch logs. All the logs were wool, and the hexagons were black taffate-type fabric. I worked for about 3 months on it and can't believe I didn't take a picture.

Was trying to finish projects and rotory cutter kept comming apart thought I had really bad cutter so bought a new on cost me $28 to find out that I had put the screw on the wrong side

I just did that recently with a jelly roll quilt idea I got on this board and have done most all of the other things, too. However, according to my finances, the worse mistake I ever made was starting!
