Would it be OK to tie a GFG?

I was shopping thrift stores with my friend, when she found this hand sewn GFG for $14. She always finds deals on quilts & tops at thrift stores. I'd complained to her previously that I've never found deals like that, so she offered it to me to buy. I bought it, and I would like to finish it and give it to her for Christmas. I am planning on squaring up the top, sides, and bottom. In order for me to get it completed by Christmas, I would have to tie it, as I have never machine quilted, and know of no LA in the area.
So my question is, would it be OK to tie this quilt? The hexagons are 2 1/2 inches from point to point. I will probably be using a poly batt that is OK for tying. |
What a beautifu top. You could use Poly..just be sure to check how faraway you would need to tie. If this was mine, with all the beauiful work, I would hand quilt it. I realize that it couldn't be done for Christmas, but it would be well worth the wait.

Lovely top. Sure, you can tie it. It's your quilt so finish it the way you want.

If I were to tie it I would use poly batting and tie about every 3-4".

It's a real beauty and of course you can tie it 3"-4" apart probably.
I'm with Pat625 - handpieced, I'd definitely hand quilt it. If your friend is not expecting it this Christmas, you have 13 months to get it done. If you do tie use Perle cotton. |
Yes you can tie. I tied one with embrodery floss, matching the floss to the fabric color. I tied in every hexagon. There is a photo in the gallery. You could hardly see the ties, sense they match the fabric. I have also done one using an embrodery stitch in each hex. It sort of resembled a star. I love hand quilting, but hands are getting to old and stiff for that, and I stink at machine quilting! You do what you have to do!! By the way. You have a beautiful GFG top!

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to handquilt it, and give it to her for mother's day. She is my best friend's mother, and is sort of like a surrogate mother for me. I really felt that it should be hand quilted with cotton batting, but I wanted it finished quickly, (since Christmas is next month). This will give me more time to finish it the way I want. Now that my mind is made up, I just need to figure out how to quilt it. LOL. |
Wow, what a find!
