I just sewed a scant 1/4 in with my trusty singer machine. I took the fabric and moved it left, under my pressure foot.

Good for you I still can't figure it out.
I keep trying and I can't get the 1/4 inch right.

I don't understand. Maybe this is a DUH!!! for me.

Happy that you found that rascally scant 1/4" :D:D:D

Keep sewing and measuring the seam allowance with a ruler, keep on keeping on...you will get it

amandasgramma 11-25-2010 09:00 AM

On my old machines, I would use painters tape (used to use masking tape) and mark the 1/4" line.......with the scant 1/4" just move the tape to the left a little bit.

a scant 1/4 inch is in actuality only 3/8th if you have a machine that has a moveable needle then with the needle set in the direct middle just shift it over one click to the right on the needle adjustment button if you have a set needle you will have to learn the sweet spot but moving the fabric under the presser foot.

MadQuilter 11-25-2010 09:36 AM

I'm lucky in that I can move my needle. Actually on the new machine, I prefer to move the needle and use the regular sewing foot instead of the 1/4" foot.

I think my problem is that I don't always feed the fabric in straight past my 1/4" foot, and that throws me off sometimes.

Melinda in Tulsa 11-25-2010 10:25 AM

3/8 inch is *larger* than a 1/4". 3/16" is what you need for a scant 1/4"

littlehud 11-25-2010 07:28 PM

I'm pretty good at the quarter inch seam but am still working on the scant. Sigh.

bjnicholson 11-26-2010 04:21 PM

I found out that the 1/4" mark on my Janome is actually a scant 1/4". I found this out AFTER I plunked my money down for a 1/4" foot

dgsmom 11-26-2010 04:30 PM

great job. i'm lucky i can move my needle when i need to do the scant 1/4

Annaleehunter 11-26-2010 06:50 PM

I am a slave to my 1/4 inch foot! If it can't be done with that I just don't try! I am a whimp, I know!

donnalynett 11-26-2010 09:13 PM

I've never figured out the reasoning behind the "scant" 1/4"? Why would you use it instead of just the 1/4"?

EagarBeez 11-27-2010 08:46 AM

I've heard that using a scant, saves even more fabric. I have figured out how to do it, but, I rather stick with quarter inch, it will withstand better with every day use I think
