I have some quilts that I use and some I don't. I bought a quilt that is hand appliqued with Iris all over it, made in the early 1950's. I would never use that quilt, and I am passing it on to my son who loves Iris. I will give him the strong message that this quilt should be preserved. I make many quilts and the people I give them to always use them. My daughter's dog Norah Jean loves to chew on them too and I repair them over and over.

Sit in a closet--my foot! And little to no wall space except in hallway, where three quilts hang. The rest are folded (the get refolded about every three months or when someone wants to see them) and on the end of the bed in one of my spare bedrooms. Right now I have some terry cloth towels on top of them because that's where Mehitabel and Maude, my rescue cats, like to sleep. All the beds in the house are covered with quilts as bedspreads. froggyintexas

To me it depends on the story behind the quilt. If I made it, I would use it every day; if it was a family thing, I'd probably display but not use it.

roserips 02-27-2014 07:58 AM

I prefer to use my quilts, I do have one on display but it wound up on the bed since we were cold. I have a quilt my grandmother made and I used it till it wore out. I do have a piece that I plan to make a teddy bear out of to pass on to my grand children that there great great grandma made and my grand father tied.

SouthPStitches 02-27-2014 08:22 AM

Yes, I use my quilts. I have no one to pass onto. IMHO they are to be enjoyed and well loved. What means the world to you may mean squat to the upcoming generations.

I have a friend whose children grew up posing for her scrapbooks. None of the pictures seem real!!

The only quilt I don't use regular is my great grandmothers, it's right at 100 years old, a grandmothers garden pattern.

caspharm 02-27-2014 11:31 AM

I think it depends on the fabric and the meaning of the quilt. I would say most of mine I would use up, but others have fabric or designs that I like.

kdid82 02-27-2014 11:41 AM

I have 3 that are over 100 years old, from family; used to use and wash them all the time until I found out how old they were, so now they are not being used

cathyvv 02-27-2014 11:45 AM

I'm a 'user'! Stuffing it in the closet means you have no memories associated with it, except the making of it. Using a quilt is memories of love, smiles, contentment, happiness, comfort when sad, and so on.

linynp 02-27-2014 12:26 PM

Use them!! Then I can make more :)

I would prefer that my quilts get used, and well loved. The first quilt I ever made was for my daughter when she was in grade school, and it was the only bed sized quilt I ever hand quilted. She used it growing up, then went into a black and white phase, so she asked for another quilt, but then she put away the first quilt for safekeeping. She considers it a very special quilt and has plans of giving it to our DGD Zoe when she gets a little older to be passed down since she cannot have children. The second quilt I made was made for our DS, Zoe's Dad, when he was in grade school or middle school (not sure exactly), but this quilt was machine quilted, and not hand quilted as my carpal tunnel became too painful for me to hand quilt. That quilt was on his bed all through high school, followed him when he left home, returned with him when he returned home after a major breakup, and he still has the quilt, even though the batting is nearly gone. I do, however, need to make him and our DDIL a quilt for their bed, although they have since switched to a king size bed, so I need to re-evaluate what type of quilt I will make them. I guess that was a very long-winded explanation that I make my quilts to be used, with a few exceptions - like the quilts I make for our bi-annual family reunions. However, imagine how I felt when I saw one of the very first quilts I made being used as a dog bed. I have no words.

I want mine used. Not to be drugged thru the mud but used as a quilt for warmth. BUT, I have made picnic quilts which are to be thrown in the trunk and spread on the ground when needed

When I have a new grandchild or I make one for a friend, I make two, one personalized with their name and date on it so they can keep it. The other one is a drag-around that they can use every day. You know how kids are, they drag it all over the house, outside to sit on, etc. The drag-around is usually a one piece front and back made from their favorite material, ie, bears, cats, bob the builder, princess, etc. I've been making drag-around quilts for over 50 years because that is what the kids like. Intricate piece work is for the keepers.

I'm a beginner and so far have only made 3 baby quilts for showers, but now working on one for DH for him to use while watching (sleeping) Nascar & Football. All my future quilts will be for my kids & grandkids with instruction to use them.

Rubesgirl 02-27-2014 07:10 PM

Use them! I give most of what I make as gifts and it thrills me when the recipient tells me how much they use it. I had to tell one friend that it did no good to put it on a shelf and save it "for good" because she was afraid her twins would get it dirty. She finally put it out to snuggle under on the sofa with the kids. Happy me, happy quilt!

SittingPretty 02-27-2014 07:19 PM

I feel so badly every time I think about it. I had a quilt which was pieced by my aunt on my father's side and was layered and quilted by my aunt on my mother's side. I used that quilt until it fell apart, and then threw it away. Why, oh why, didn't I put it away when it was starting to wear? Why didn't I keep it even if it was worn? I have lost a treasure that can never be replaced.

DOTTYMO 02-27-2014 10:52 PM

I use mine 24 hours a day. I have a throw for the seating and I sleep under quilt. My dogs have their own and much prefer a quilt made with polyester than cotton batting. How can they tell which is which not sure but they can.

A quilt is to used and enjoyed. I enjoy making when I give away I am not interested if they are put away I have had my enjoyment as long as they don't tell me it's in a cupboard.

earthwalker 02-27-2014 11:09 PM

Well I don't have any special quilts made by precious family, so I use all the ones I make. When I make them for others - which is most of them, I really want them to put them to full use....I use all the china, glassware and linens handed down to me and often wear my Great Grandmothers engagement ring. I think of her then and it gives a sense of "connectedness".

Elisabrat 02-28-2014 03:25 AM

my quilts are made with love and to be loved. I have not made a piece of art that couldn't be used. Seems to me it would be a waste of time..

Wild8580 02-28-2014 07:54 AM

I make quilts to be used. If they wear out from use, so be it. If it wears out from "miss-use", that another issue. If it's used for a pet blanket, left in the sun, or laundered without care, it makes me sad. But a gift given, is a gift given. Quilts I make for my personal use, are used. Some are on display, some are on the beds, some are left to snuggle under on the couch. I love looking around my home and seeing my craft in use or on display.

solstice3 02-28-2014 08:20 AM

USE IT!!!! Now I do have a few well worn ones that were my grandmothers which are rarely used but used just the same.... very gently

Whoopie 02-28-2014 08:37 AM

I am sleeping under 4 of them. There are others for different seasons in the closet, and a couple waiting for fair time. I am making one for "Sam" who plows my snow.

JoanneS 02-28-2014 09:41 AM

I've given most of my quilts away. The ones I've kept are all in use. My daughter use most of the ones I've given to her. The ones not in use are displayed on the stair bannister. Her daughter took one to college with her. My DIL and DGSs the ones I've given them, too.

JanieH 02-28-2014 10:56 AM

I definitely want most of my quilts used, loved, washed, and in tatters. But I am getting ready to make 2 Dear Jane quilts for my great nephew and great niece and I will want those to be displayed.

So, it depends on the quilt and the vision for it!

Quiltlady330 02-28-2014 01:04 PM

I don't enter quilt competitions so my ribbons and prizes are seeing my grandchildren and children use my quilts and love them right to pieces sometimes. I recently repaired a 40-year old quilt for my daughter and an 18-year-old quilt for my grandson. Yes, I have some I don't particularly want down on the floor but mostly I want my quilts loved and used.

When my dear MIL passed, my husband and his sister took turns picking the quilts that she had. Some of the older, worn quilts were the 1st to be picked. It was the memories that made some more special than others. It was a fair way to keep the quilts alive and I cherish the ones my DH picked. I've told my kids they have to do the same thing when I'm gone even though my DH says he's going to sell them all at a yard sale for $1 each. He's kidding.... he loves my quilts and I always get a big hug and kiss when he teases me about it. And the kids argue over the quilts every time they're here together for a visit.

where in the UP? I'm between Munising & Manistique.

w7sue 03-01-2014 12:02 AM

I make mine to be used and abused (i.e. loved)! I would much rather replace one than find it later in perfect condition!

Deb727 03-01-2014 02:49 AM

I have a quilt of my great-grandmother's that has definitely seen it's better days, holes everywhere and the batting is falling apart. I am cutting the parts out that are still salvageable and incorporating them into my own quilts.

Mousie 03-09-2014 01:34 PM

both.
Wall hangings etc. I would not be washing too often, and I have a UFO that has tons of applique.
It will go on the bed, but will be removed at night.
My husband kicks all comforters, quilts etc. on the floor and they are a hazard for me if I get up.

nls 04-02-2014 06:09 PM

Use them! Than make new ones!

toverly 04-03-2014 04:11 AM

If a quilt isn't used, it has no memories. If it has no memories, it ends up in an estate or yard sale because it means nothing to the owner. So use it up, wear it out, love it.

Colorful1 04-03-2014 04:19 AM

USED! I am adamant that my quilts be used. I put a lot of time and thought into them since they are my creative outlet and it brings me no greater pleasure than to know my gift is being used, bringing someone joy and comfort.

Sewnoma 04-03-2014 05:13 AM

I am lucky enough to have several quilts that my grandmothers had made for me over the years.

I use them UP, just as both of them would have wanted me to. I use them until they're falling apart, and then I store the raggedy things because I can't bear to get rid of them. I still have my baby blankets...the embroidery has rotted away and they have stains and spots and rips from me dragging them around everywhere and building countless forts with them...and I love that I still have them even though they're super delicate and not worth a single penny to anybody but me.

My fondest wish, when I give my quilts away, is that they will be used until they are used up too. I wouldn't have all these fond memories of my grandmother's quilts if I hadn't been allowed to use them all my life.

I like to say, "A quilt is a hug trapped in fabric." So don't put my hugs in the closet! Wrap up in them, and know you're loved!
