Using left over blocks, and scraps from my last two Dachie quilts. I made this one.
Everything was going smooth. Not a single goof! WooHoo Till I laid it out to measure. It is 50x50x49.5x51.5. How on earth did I manage that! The top has "grown" if I fuss with it. I can get it to late flat. I am hand quilting so I should be able to hide it. I wanted to keep going bigger. Plan was to repeat the inner border, then add another row of blocks all the way around. keep doing blocks then border till I got to a twin. However now I am thinking I should quit while I’m ahead. The top is already exaggerated. Adding to it, will either make it pucker oddly or be too wavy to stitch. What do you think, leave it as is call it done and bind it up? Or undo it, “find” my mistake, and keep going bigger? |
I can't say for sure, but it looks to me like the top left corner is off a bit. Since it is not too far into the quilt, I might take that apart and trim off the piano key strip and see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, I would leave it as is and finsih it up. Anyone cuddling under it isn't going to measure it.
Good Luck! :) |
Sharon Schamber has a YouTube video that shows how to shrink over-stretched or mis-measured blocks. (I'm on my iPod so can't add the link. Then you can keep going. Unless you are entering it in a show or selling it, a little off isn't going to show when it's on a bed.

Call it done, bind it up, stiple it and give it away as a babay girl quilt. I see nothing wrong with it. Stippling is very forgiving.

My best guess is how you did your borders. Here's the trick I've learned to use to measure for borders. Measure the top, middle, and bottom. Add the three numbers, divide by 3. Cut the top and bottom border that length and stitch it on. You may have to ease or pull a bit to make them fit. Then do the same for the side borders. Measure each side and the middle. Add the 3 numbers, divide total by 3 and cut the side borders that length. Stitch them on.
If you leave the first border uneven, each border you add will make the problem worse. You will have more fullness to 'work in' than you'll want to deal with. I'm a LA quilter. Trust me. Uneven borders are a nightmare!! Becky PS. I do like your quilt design and the colors!! Have a dachund friend who would kill for it!! lol! |
I just had this problem, I fixed it with a dart!! I know it's a nono but I couldn't bare to take it apart AGAIN so I just put a dart in where is was puckering and waving, it worked just fine and no one is the wiser!!

Good Luck! :) Much better. No not entering in a show. But would like to sell it. I breed Dachshunds. My goal is to make a few Dachie quilts and add them to my Web page. One of these days! I have never measured a border. I always do a running strip, just cut it when I get to the end. Will have to keep that tip in mind. obviously my method doesn't always work. ah man, I really want it bigger. Itching to make a twin. But I think If I add to it, it will over complicate its simplicity. Arg... to many decision in quilting! Still need to pick a backing. |
I would not undo and redo. This is a scrap quilt (and a very cute and fun one at that). It's not visibly wonky, and even if it were, it's not a big deal. Unless your intent is to frame it and put it on a museum wall, such a small variation from square is not a big issue. In my experience, even if you got it absolutely perfect before binding, if you use your quilts on a regular basis and wash them, within a few washes you would have a little bit of unevenness. Not an issue. If you wanted something perfectly square and flat and uniform, you'd buy a mattress cover from Sears.
