Would you take this deal?
A lady close by is moving and has offered this deal: I am not big on the velvet but thought I might could use some of it for appliques (think animals).
I have about 8 full boxes of fabric. Some are sheeting, there is a lot of teal/dark turquoise velvet. One box is heavy fabrics like brocade, velveteens and velvets. Some is small pieces already cut for pouches and cell covers. It is quilt weight and heavier cottons. Most are bigger sized pieces. Before I did clothing, I did bags. The boxes are large moving size boxes about 2 ft x 14 in x 10 in tall. They are mostly heavy. There is a good bit of felt, some vintage 70s sheets and other bits. I can throw in some vintage notions like rickrack and buttons, a couple of purse handles etc. You may only use about half of it, but it is great for linings, straps, etc, quite a bit of solid color pieces in denim and light canvas/twill weight for bags that you don't have to buy. It is about average for purse making value. Mostly none of it is designer fabric. There is some vintage fabric. I have a few bits of clothing I made, like skirts, that I later decided to reuse for fabric. I'd really rather move it all along, so maybe we can make a deal for the whole 8 boxes? I can put all these in garbage bags for you if that would work better, btw. How does $10 box sound ? If you take all 8 boxes, I can give you a better deal than $10 box...say $60. Also I have a hanging dress form if you would like to use it for display. I also have one shopping bag of leather and a whole big box of vinyl for pouches and purses, if you want to venture that way. Let me know if you are interested in anything besides the fabric boxes and I'll work out a price for these things. |
Not me. If I think I wouldn't use it, why keep it around.
If you were 'heavy' into crazy quilts or belonged to a crazy quilt group, I would say go for it. But to have 8 tubs to sit around until 'one day'. Thanks but no thanks
I would not buy anything I can't use...Just spent to miuch time clearing out unusable fabrics before I moved..I don't have time to use all the good stuff I have!!

If you wanted to make purses and bags then it would be okay. If it was free I would go for it but since I am not interested in doing purses, not me. Can you look at it before you purchase it?
I doubt I would go for the "deal", many velvets, and upholstry fabrics require special care. I don"t like to work on fabrics that may or may not be able to go into the washing machine. Unless I knew exactly what I would use that quantity of non-quilting fabrics .. it would just be a big amount of clutter.

Real velvets are very expensive. Nice velvet throw pillows sold for $40 each at our Guild booth at a local Home Show. A lined velvet throw sold for $85. The fabric was donated from a local upholster shop that was ordered but wasn't used. We bought inexpensive solid color throw pillows at Walmart (cheaper then the forms) and put the velvet slip covers over them. We made a nice profit per pillow. Our time was donated to make the covers. Some members embossed designs in the velvets, added nice trim, and some embroidered on the velvet. The booth fees are pretty high in these type shows but if you have the right products to sell it will be a nice profit making venue.

If you have some friends that may be interested in some of it, include them in on it and share!
I have to say, I would pass. I've been given loads like that before, and while no doubt for someone it's all treasure, for a quilter often most of it is unusable, and then you have to find a home for what you can't use.
It's taken me a long while to be able to turn down fabric, but I have found it's better to be choosy... |
My DM used to make the most beautiful crazy quilts from velvet, silk and brocades.
Thanks everyone! I do make totes and bags so that is what intriqued me. I may tell her I don't want the velvet but everything else. If I don't use it, my mom loves fabric too...if you sit still for too long she will either paint you or put fabric on you. lol
Check with your local guild and see if anyone is interested. If you can't use it, I don't think I would buy it. It would just take up space in your home. I also think she will go lower with the price just to get rid of it. It's worth a try if you decide to buy.

Is it something you could break up and resell on craig's list?
Though it sounds tempting, I would probably pass.
I'm a sucker for fabric------------I'd take it. But I'd try for $50
It is a lot of $ if you can only use a few pieces of velvet. I would pass.
tngal: wow.. I would take it and start sewing my widdle fingers off !LOL But then I am a velvet kinda gal; I would have to examine it all very closely to see if I wanted it all or just a box or two.
Interesting for sure .. Let us know what you decide ! |
I had some nice quality velvet given to me and I made a throw pillow for my granddaughter using velvet and cotton with a velvet back. It was very nice and she loved it.
In a heartbeat!
I am going tonight to look at it. I plan to get all 8 boxes and about 60 zippers. I have some ideas for the velvet and some friends already said they would like some too. So if I cant use it, someone else will.
If you have the $$to spare ...go for it. You can always share the things you don't want or sell them
I would have to pass on this deal. It sounds like a lot of things that you may not use. Why not spend that 60 dollars and buy what you know you will use.
dont think i would do it but that is just me i dont make alot of crazy quilts or bags
"It's taken me a long while to be able to turn down fabric, but I have found it's better to be choosy..."
I could not agree with you more, Willferg. I used to be so excited when I'd come upon big lots of 'stuff'. Then I realized my place became the new 'storage bin' for all these unnecessaries. I now only buy what I love and require. tngal, I hope it's all you hope it will be and I'm glad you have friends to split it up with. Who knows? A beautiful tapestry crazy quilt just may emerge from all this!! Post photos!! |
About a year ago I was looking for teal velvet to use in a quilt for my daughter. Couldn't find it anywhere. If you decide you just don't need the teal velvet pm me, and we'll talk!!

I personally would grab it. I have a disease which is commonly known to a lot of quilters...My name is Sharon and I am a "Fabriholic"! I would buy it for the older fabrics since I LOVE vintage fabrics. I would bring it all home and spread it out and just roll around on it! Peach would be right there with me!

BTW, my hometown is Yorkville, TN...lol It is a super small town of about 300 people. |
I would be really intersted as I love the color of the velvet and velvet in general and go throught it all and find homes for what you don't want.
I love to sew everything, from quilts to clothes to bags to pillow covers, so I am sure I can find something to make out of these. I am also excited about the zippers, I have seen those as she had some for sale on her shop. They are 7" and 9" so they would make good tote zippers or pouches.
I will try to take pictures tomorrow (or tonight) and let ya'll know. ;) |
Consider contacting your local Little Theatre group or a local college. They ALWAYS need exotic fabrics and can probably rustle up the $$ to purchase it.
Not me...I am not into leftovers. I like to think things out

I would interested in the dress form. Can you post a pic and the price?
It absolutely doesn't sound like something I'd use for quilting. I wouldn't even take it if she was giving it away!
Well I took it. There is about 4 different colors of velvet, most a yard of (give or take since she did cut from it). Also, several solid colors and that is just 3 boxes I have gone through. Several scrap pieces but big enough for totes or pouches. In the small box of knick knacks were some Pinking Shears by Fiskars (cut good) and a Singer Side Cutter, lots of old buttons (which my mom loves!). I still have 5 more boxes to go through but I am doing it in spurts as I am washing everything.
I didn't get the dress form as I mostly make clothes for my daughter who is 4 1/2 and I just use her. lol |
It's pretty cheap so you have to decide if you would use it. I'd probably say yes, and choose what you can use and move the rest along. Think $10/yard for cotton fabrics and if you only used 5-6 yards, it'd at least be a break even deal. Then, because this many boxes of fabric has TONS of fabric in it, I'm sure you'd get your money back. I'd probably say yes...in fact, I know I would.
I`ve seen velvet in quilts, it`s not for me. But if you make a lot of purses or eye glass cases, or even Barbie Doll dresses, you could use some, or do you know people that sew cloths for childern? Personally I don`t have room to store it, and it would just get older in the boxes.
Well.....I was going to say I'd have to look at it first. I love, love crazy quilts and it sounds like there are some fabrics, and adornments that would work. I think I'm speaking for many of us ....pictures please.
I would buy it, but I also make medieval garb and so am very likely to use velvets and other specialty fabrics. Might be nice for a crazy quilt
