This is the tute I found. Not sure if this is the one she was referring to but it shows how it is done.

This is how I do it too....Love it.

Chickpea 01-20-2011 04:19 PM

I found this link for a ladder stitch. It is the same stitch I learned as a little girl to hem skirts. I think they called it blind stitching. Anyway it is a nice stitch that looks much better than any whip stitch can.

http://turningturning.com/tutorial-i...quilt-binding/

Whoops, looks like someone else found the same thing and learned the same thing I learned in 4-H!

grammysharon 01-20-2011 04:28 PM

Thanks for the link, I am going to try it on the baby quilt I am quilting.

:D :D :D

auntiehenno 01-20-2011 04:47 PM

I do this with all my sewing, and stitches do not show. Learned from my dear Mother.

Ziggysmom 01-20-2011 05:01 PM

I learned this stitch 50+++ years from a 4H leader. I've used it sew the opening in stuffed aninmals, dolls, pillows then quilt bindings when I started quilting.

Jackie R 01-20-2011 05:09 PM

I saw this a while back and that's the way I stitch the binding too - it really looks better.

ranae 01-20-2011 05:19 PM

I was taught this way also! It is so easy and creates a clean look when done!

penski 01-20-2011 05:24 PM

thank you

I learned this stitch in a college course on handmade baby garments. It's a great stitch for bindings.

Yes, please share the link...

feffertim 01-20-2011 06:12 PM

Go to the very top of this page where it shows all the options you can look at. The first one says 'home', when you click on that you get a menu on the left side, one of which shows tutorials.

I always thought that was the blind hem stitch... that's what I use when hemming garments by hand. Cool! Now I know that I'll be "professional" with my baby quilt... if I ever get the hand quilting part done ha ha... :D

I love the Missouri Star Quilt Company tutorials. Here's one on binding, which I think is what you're thinking of:

I don't have a GENERAL either...am I not on the same pages as you all are?

I can click on home, but then it comes up main, pictures, etc

annieshane 01-20-2011 09:16 PM

This is the way I have always done my bindings. Don't know when or how I learned this, but really don't like the whip stitch. And, I can't do a whip stitch without the stitches showing! Like most of the quilters here, I surely don't want to see my stitches. This tute is very easy to understand and should help make this process so much more enjoyable.

madamekelly 01-20-2011 10:06 PM

I have used this method for years in hand sewing. I did not know it had a name. (I once made my DD a dress, pinafore, and bonnet, when she was little, all by hand. Just wanted to see if I could...)

Rann 01-20-2011 10:21 PM

Back just past the middle of the last century when I was forced, screaming and kicking, to take Home Economics, we were taught this stitch as the blind stitch. AND, I can remember how to do it.

I was taught the ladder stitch at a very young age. It's what we use to close up dolls. I also use it in applique and binding.

It's a great stitch and should be shared with the world! :0) Keep posting topics, OP.

yellowsnow55 01-21-2011 02:32 AM

Love ladder stitch, I thought everyone used it.

feffertim 01-21-2011 06:54 AM

There is NO general chit-chat, NO tutorials....

jaciqltznok 01-21-2011 07:05 AM

being OLD blonde broad, and a Gemini, I refused to be beaten by this missing TUTORIALs....I clicked on the ALL sections link and my line up looks like yours now!....but ONLY if I click that link...clicking on HOME does not give me that line up!

strange....BUT I did find the tutes!

feffertim 01-21-2011 07:27 AM

So glad you found it, there are some really useful tutes on there

raynhamquilter 01-21-2011 05:21 PM

Yes, I learned it 50+ years ago as an invisible blind hem stitch. Invisible is good!

I just saw what your mother taught you. I used to do that all the time but I have improved my stitches to a quicker method similar to the ladder stitch method. I even finish off the thread the same way, great minds think alike.
I use that stitch when ever I need to repair seams, dolls cloth bodies or any toy for that matter. I repaired a quilt some one had done and that the stitches had come out. My stitches were so small people thought it was done my machine not hand.

Not to be critical, but I don't think these stitches are invisible.
