Wow...Surprise Offer to Upgrade Sewing Room!
I bought a Grace QZone Queen long arm frame last year, misunderstanding that you had to set it up either for crib size or full length...somehow I got it in my head you could switch it back and forth. Once I got it, it became obvious that we were going to have to set it up for full size which took up an enormous chunk of my sewing space. Like half. I had my long arm against one wall (Which also means I can't use pantographs) and everything else against the opposite and a narrow strip of about 3 feet in between. I could barely squeeze past the corner to get into the closet where I keep most of my supplies. This is the spare bedroom, in our house.
I was in there the other day and hubby commented that I didn't have much room....You're telling me, I said. I'm getting really frustrated because I have nowhere to lay anything out. Why don't we move all this into the master bedroom and we can move our bed in here, he said. I thought he was kidding. He wasn't. He's seriously willing to give up the master bedroom for a small, spare room so I can have a bigger sewing space! How amazing is that? I still haven't decided whether I can take him up on it or not. I feel kind of guilty....But, I likely will. Stay tuned for updates! Watson |
Awesome!!!!!!!

What a wonderful husband!
|
What a keeper! How exciting, I am sure you can’t wait to get everything switched over, have fun!
|
Unless you stay in the master bedroom most of the day then it's really wasted space just to sleep and get dressed in the biggest bedroom. It's a shame to follow suppose to because it's the way it's done in your own home.
|
Sounds like a good option!

We have a two bedroom condo and one of the bedrooms is a huge master suite. As a bedroom, it always felt like wasted space to me. When my husband started quilting last year we decided to switch rooms because there just wasn't room enough for both of us in the sewing room at the same time.
We love it and don't regret it at all; I just wish we'd done it sooner! I say...go for it and don't feel guilty! :) |
Watson, that's awesome and actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Good luck!!
|
Oh sometimes you have got to love Hubbies!!! :D
|
Sure! you don't have to use a master bedroom as a bedroom, just because that's "normal!" In our last house the "master" was my husband's office space. Do what works for you and don't feel guilty at all!
|
I say go for it! What a nice surprise!
|
Go for the master bedroom as your sewing room, my girlfriend and her hubby did that. They moved everything into the spare bedroom except one tall dresser that was practically empty. The only inconvenience I see is the huge walk in closet and beautiful master bath is in the master bedroom. She said it's no big deal for them to walk down the hall and use the shower and get dressed.

Wow! What a sweetheart!
|
I have talked about doing this. You have a very understanding husband!
|
Wow, he is definitely a keeper! I have a quilting friend who did that and was very happy with it.
|
my nephew has suggested I move my longarm up from the basement into the living room! That is starting to sound like a good idea, except where would I put all the sewing stuff I actually have in my living room! I use an antique cedar hope chest as my coffee table and it is full of quilted things. I have another chest in front of the picture window for my plants and it is full off....wait for it....fabric and UFO's, The bookcases on either side of the fireplace are full of longarm thread. I actually need to build another house so I can move my bed out of this quilting studio!

I have two rooms on one side of my 5 1/2 foot hallway. One is larger than the other and the smaller was built for my sewing room, no closet ( what was I thinking) At the time of the build, 16 years ago, I was into quilting. I sewed baby heirloom sewing mostly and embroidered, so I had 3 machines, a regular sewing machine, embroidery machine and serger. With all the supplies added and then the actual cutting out process, just working on a project, and making my first two Queen quilts, I soon outgrew the small room. So.. we switched the guest room with a closet to my new and bigger sewing room. It made my ‘new’ guest room tight for getting into bed. I have a queen size bed and a long dresser only but it works because it’s usually a grandchild spending the night and TV is wall mounted.
However since I started quilting, I find the larger room is getting too small-lol One brother-in-law suggested we could knock the wall out between the town rooms!-lol I don’t think my husband thought this was funny. I told BIL that I couldn’t do that, because not only would I lose the closet, our a/c unit is between the rooms! I did tell hubby we could buy a big shed and finish the inside….and then move all the living room furniture, TV and him outside! I’d get a frame to go with my long arm and put it in the living room!- lol It does make more sense to use your bigger room for quilting so if he is agreeable, go for it! |
That's amazing Watson! And I thought it was good when we moved in this house and my husband said "Why don't you take the two front bedrooms upstairs for your sewing?" Yours beats that!

Five * * * * * Plan . The other ideas using Living Room and or another spacious room
|
My sewing room is next to the room we use for an office, it's twice the size of my room, and they separate by a set of pocket doors. My husband has offered to change spaces with me, but it also would mean that my computer desk, file hutch, and a couch would stay put. This doesn't leave me with much room. If I could convenience him to get rid of the 1970 something couch it might be doable, but he says it's still useful so why trash it? I'd rather add onto my sewing room for more space, but that would ruin the roofline he says. Seems like I'll be staying in my small, little crowded room.
|
. I walked into a friend's new home one day and realized how dated my home seemed. I realized my big computer desk was not needed since I use a laptop. It was a piece of furniture that I always had and never thought I didn't need. Out it went. Same with my big tv hutch that we used before the flat screens. I had had the stuff so long it seemed like I had to keep it because it was part of my home. It served it's purpose. That's enough. The big overstuffed chair went, the drapes were next then the old dark area rugs. Got rid of the loveseat no one ever really used, it just filled space. I think we all get use to how things are and don't see what it can be.

I swear men are practical to a fault. My husband still just stares at me when we talk about pillow shams. He just doesn't get it that no one sleeps on them. I explain that they are just pretty and make the bed look nice. He absolutely will never, ever understand pillow shams. So I think he wouldn't mind a bit using master bedroom for a more functional purpose. Since we are moving (this is a new big bold big step for us), we might have to consider such a change up.
|
I cover the bed pillows the old fashioned way tucked under a bed cover. My husband thinks that is useless, he thinks it's more practical to fold the cover and sheet down to expose the pillows. You can tell who made the bed that morning by the pillows.
|
I Would start packing and moving into the room.
don't wait. |
I've never understood shams either! The way some people have a lot of decorative pillows, shams, etc, just seems to me a waste of time and energy.
My sister does that and I do admit it looks pretty though.......... I've never told her how I feel because that's her thing and it's all good! |
I do not understand a bunch of extra pillows on a bed either. Where does one put them when one wants to go to bed?
|
I used to have a few extra pillows in Pillow Shams on my bed. Made the room look really nice/bed too. We tossed them out of the way on the floor when we went to bed. Until....
One night I got up to use the bathroom and they must have fallen from where they were stacked on the floor. I fell flat on my face when I tripped over them, hitting the dresser on the way down. I think that was the last time we had extra pillows on our bed. I have to admit, it was much quicker and easier to make the bed in the morning, without having to pick up the extra pillows and arrange them. Now, I just fold down the quilt, leaving a few inches under the pillows and then fold the extra back up over them. I always make my quilts, when making bed sized quilts, the size of what a bedspread would be. My quilts hang down almost to the floor and they are long enough to hang down that way off the end of the bed. And the quilt is also long enough to cover the pillows with tucking in a nice pleat under them. |
Well...it looks like I am going to make the move, but this has blossomed into a much bigger project!
I mentioned that I would really like it if we could find a piece of flooring before I moved everything in, as carpet is not a great option for a sewing room. This has turned into...We are re-doing the entire upper floor in laminate. And, if you do the upper floor, you have to do the stairs. And, if you do the stairs, you need new railings..... So...it's looking like a couple of months before I will actually move, but that gives me time to plan the layout and de clutter my current room so I'm not moving a bunch of stuff I don't need. So looking forward to it! I'm going to start a "Best ideas for planning your sewing room" thread. Watson |
