ok, I'm in search of poly envelopes...so many choices and such a wide price range...any ideas on a certain brand or a good seller on ebay. PM me if you have info that would be helpful. Thanks

bjnicholson 01-15-2011 02:37 PM

The package of fabric I received from hperttula123 was a priority mail envelope and it was pretty much decimated. The only thing keeping it together was a rubber band! Luckly the fabric was intact.

so, maybe we need to send it in a samsonite suitcase...lol...isn't that gorilla proof.

sik1010 01-15-2011 03:13 PM

Glad you got your package and everything was okay, kinda hard to believe that your book survived after looking at your pictures.

SherriB 01-15-2011 03:28 PM

Another tip I learned from buying/selling here is to tape the recipients name and address to the bag you are putting the item in. That way if the outer packaging gets destroyed, hopefully the extra address will help it get to it's new owner. I usually go overboard when taping a package to send out. But that comes from sending weekly care packages to Iraq when my sister was over there. I learned alot from that.

Rntraveler 01-15-2011 03:39 PM

That is really scary...glad you got it ok..

memereof8 01-15-2011 04:34 PM

I know this is not about fabric, but last year (2009) my husband and I mailed 4 christmas cards to the grandkids, DIL and son. Did they receive them? Of course not. One year later I feel that the cards either were opened up (to this day checks never cashed) or buried in the back yard of the postal person. Not happy with our Post Office. Alway an excuse.

OneMoreQuilt 01-15-2011 04:37 PM

Wow! Amazing it's still in one piece even with her careful packaging.

CarrieAnne 01-15-2011 04:40 PM

Wow, you did a great job packaging it, I cant beleive it help up to all that!

butterflywing 01-15-2011 04:44 PM

a while back i sent a package to france that i thought was well wrapped. i took my chances and didn't insure it, but i did send it 1st class. months later it still hadn't gotten there and i kissed it off. after about a total of 4 months my postal lady showed up with her hands behind her back laughing. she said ' guess what i have for you'. she showed me the package, with the address missing and almost nothing of the return address but the town where i live and the first name, butterflywing. she always teases me about that. the package had gone to france, was undeliverable, came home and went back to my hometown. once there, the postmaster asked if anyone knew who butterflywing was. after my postlady dried her pants, she brought it back to me. if it hadn't said butterflywing, no one would've known where to take it. boy, did i wrap it after that.
the recipient worked really hard to unwrap that package when it finally got there.

EdieClay 01-15-2011 04:49 PM

I love to know what really happened to your package! How on earth did it get in this condition.

frugalfabrics 01-15-2011 04:54 PM

I'm glad to say that I just ordered some poly bags online...thanks *kriscraft99* for helping me out in choosing a good seller on ebay.

Hopefully I'll have them within a week or so.

the real misfit 01-15-2011 05:27 PM

at your local post offices they have what they call flat rate packages they supply you with the package size you need you pay one flat rate starting at 4.95 for the padded envelopes i have shipped many things in these packages including car parts all the package i have sent have never had any problem with rips or tears or even broken boxes they seem to be very cautious with those type of packages try this next time and see how you like it

Quilt-Writer 01-15-2011 05:47 PM

I had the same problem with mailers when I sent out my novel. I bought some of those poly plastic ones that will not tear or break open. They're wonderful. I write on them with a sharpie so there is no label to fall off. I lost several books in the mail before I started using these. Order from Uline. Good prices if you do a lot of shipping.

SewExtremeSeams 01-15-2011 06:19 PM

Well... it looks like they didn't BEND IT!

But, they must have done everything else to it since it is a wreck!!! :-D

nonnie60 01-15-2011 08:24 PM

It's always a good idea to put the sent to address on the inside of the pagage also, so if it ends up like your package the PO will know who it goes to. Glad you got your book in one piece.

natalieg 01-15-2011 09:33 PM

Yeah, they pretty much tried to do away with it! Thanks to Barb, it was saved!!!

I need to find an inexpensive supplier for the poly bags as well. I use manila enives a lot and the only place I have found the polys is Office Depot and they are very proud of them there!

frugalfabrics 01-15-2011 09:38 PM

Natalie just sent you a reply to your PM.

hopefully these will be our answer to safe packaging for all our future deliveries.

I gotta send my thanks out to *kriscraft99* for helping me out.

fabric whisperer 01-15-2011 09:41 PM

I would say hackey-sack instead of frisbee ~ man, that's nuts! I wrap all fabrics in plastic and seal shut, then tape securely... I thought I was being OCD about it, but now I am glad I do it that way! So glad you got it unharmed!

Recently I bought a book from Barb (frugalfabrics) and was so happy I bought from her! She placed the book in a plastic bag (I really appreciate this as my mailbox tends to get snow in it)! She then put the book into a manila envelpe and taped it shut, very well. She put tape over my address and her label and every crack and crevice. Thank goodness that she did because the following pictures are what I received a few days after she sent it out! The bag over the book kept it from getting damaged, not even a bent page! The tape over my addy was the ONLY way they said that they were able to deliver it to me, if there would not have been tape over it, it would have been destroyed!

My post man was so embarrassed! It looks like the post office decided that they should send it from MI to MT by using it as a frisbee!

Just something to think about~package them well and cross your fingers-they do stand a better chance at arriving safely!

Sure glad your sender took the time to give some extra care in packaging. It does look like "it went through the wringer" for sure.
You should see what I rec.'d in the mail this week with some templates in it. The envelope had two rubber bands around it and was partially folded when I picked it up at the P.O.. It had been quite a while since I ordered them and only knew what it might be from the name on the return addy. Two of the templates weren't damaged. The other two were, they were broken and one of them was missing a piece of the template . (acrilyc) so needless to say two were or rather are useless. The envelope was torn up so bad and had a hole in the corner, so apparently the broken piece was lost in transit.- They were sent in a large envelope much like a greeting card would come in, no bubble wrap, nothing. Our postal service leaves MUCH to be desired when it comes to handling things, and yet they are always raising postage and say they are going into the red all the time. The workers make a bundle and have all holidays off. Our local P.O. window closes at 4:30 on the dot M-F, not open at all on Sat. and no mail is even picked up on Sun. everything has to wait until Mon.. I know other delivery services, such as Fed Ex, UPS etc. don't always do a fantastic job either, but I really get disgusted with the postal service. Now our local P.O. measures every thing with a ruler if it isn't in a normal letter or legal size envelope. I ask about something I had to send to my son one day in a small bubble wrap envelope very light weight, but they charged extra postage, because I used the bubble envelope and they said "Well it requires special handling".They charge extra if you use a bubble envelope. This to me is just another way of ripping us off. They really don't seem to care about how they handle any of the mail. I was told once if you mark Fragile on it, it is even worse, unless it is really wrapped well. Sorry, Just had to vent.

wesing 01-15-2011 09:44 PM

Looks like they sent it through the jungle and let the critters gnaw on it along the way! Glad it got there safe, and thanks for the warning.

Darren

Annz 01-15-2011 10:01 PM

Oh my!! It looks like it went through the washing machine or something.

Crabby Patty 01-15-2011 10:31 PM

Isn't there some way that you can register a complaint to the U.S Postal Officials? They want their postal increases but we as consumers have to put up with crap like this. I think I would do a little checking up on the matter.Good work frugal fabrics. Good luck

sewgarden 01-16-2011 02:01 PM

Sometimes you wonder what they do with the mail. Glad it arrived well.

skydiver70 01-16-2011 02:13 PM

Several years ago, I received a package and the mail carrier (don't have the same one now) shoved the package into my mailbox (how he did that is unknown to us til now). We could not get it out. I called the Postmaster at our local post office and he came out and it took him forever to figure out how to get the package out. (We has left a note with the postmaster to hold the package at th PO and put a card in our box and we would pick it up the next day, but didn't do any good).

We have a really good mail carrier now. She is so good to watch how she puts it in the box. She will even bring it to the door if it's too large to put in the mailbox or if it is raining. She is the sweetest person we have ever had as a carrier.

We always take our packages to the PO and have them hand cancel the package to avoid some damage. I guess they have so much and those machines are hard on things.

RkayD 01-16-2011 02:33 PM

I ordered the Word Play Book from a seller on Amazon and it was also taped well but the pkg was damaged and the book is a little shell shocked. Nothing that can't be fixed by sitting under something to flatten it out but makes you wonder what in the World is going on??

Airwick156 01-16-2011 02:41 PM

When I send something in the mail especially if its got any value at all, is I also include a paper with the sender and receivers address INSIDE the package. I also do put tape over the addresses. I've never gotten any packages in the mail so I don't know how most people package theirs. Glad that the book wasn't damaged. :)

MisDixie 01-16-2011 02:53 PM

OH MY! I am off to the table to tape up the package I had ready for outgoing mail in the morning! Never again shall I laugh at my Mother's over taped packages!

jeanneb52 01-16-2011 03:46 PM

A good book is hard to kill.

frugalfabrics 01-16-2011 03:56 PM

I've got packages set to go out on Tuesday morning...and now I'm a little paranoid about sending them off in the kraft envelope like I always have.

I've ordered poly mailers, but I'm sure they won't be here for at least a week....what to do ... what to do...

Hobbyhorse1027 01-16-2011 05:36 PM

Well enjoy your book (Quilts for Baby by Ursula Reikes).

owie 01-16-2011 05:58 PM

That is just crazy. I heard a person who works for UPS say one time that if they see a box marked fragile they will throw it around on purpose just to see if it will break. That is so sad that people have total disregard for other peoples things. What is this world coming to?

Rann 01-17-2011 01:11 PM

I had a priority package with an expensive original etching in it, but failed to insure. It came to me wet and ruined with a note from the post office that it got wet--duh.

dljennings 01-18-2011 07:22 PM

having worked in frt for going on 30 years i have learned a few things about shipping stuff out

1. name and address on envelop/box with tape over it, another address label INSIDE THE PACKAGE

2 anything fabric goes in plastic.. when i mail stuff out in a big box, first thing in the box is an open heavy duty trash bag... fill the box, close & tape the bag..put the extra address label in , then close & tape the box... you only control what you put in your box to ship, not what the guy who's box is next to yours is shipping... could be bleach.. could be anything

3. my dm puts the addressee's address as both mailing & return.. so either way it gets where she wants it to go.

4. make sure you let whomever is getting a package know when you mailed it and the expected due date..

5 always get delivery confirmation

jdavis 01-24-2011 04:36 PM

Give me a break! I can't believe they delivered it that way!

frugalfabrics 01-24-2011 05:05 PM

LOL...I still can't believe it either...I've got poly-mailers now..woo hoo!

Feather3 01-24-2011 06:23 PM

When you receive a package like this you should file a complaint. My Huz had a subscription for a magazine that was part of his job. Every time it came the cover would be ripped off, or the back ripped off, or several pages gone or damaged. This was no cheap magazine either. So he filed a complaint. The MM wasn't happy, as it reflects back to him. Anyway that was the last time he got a damaged magazine. It's like anything else...if they can get away with it they will. I toohave watched PM's, UPS, FED-X toss packages like toys. I had a FED-X guy stand 10 feet from my front door & throw my package & hit my door. We're paying for a service & this is not service. It's more like taking your car to be fixed, they charge you, but never touched the car.
